Overview:
Towards 3060, much of the Periphery began to enjoy something of a technological renaissance.
The Periphery kingdoms managed (usually with outside aid) technology levels comparable with
the Great Houses in 3025. Some of the larger nations (including the Marian Hegemony) even
managed to move farther ahead, gaining the ability to produce their own BattleMechs and
increase the size of their military.
In 3060, the Hegemony began to manufacture the first of a new series of Mechs, intending to
standardize much of the MHAF by equipping them with four basic designs. Each design would
come in a lower-tech, standard model and also featured a high-tech upgraded version, usually
featuring technology such as Double Heat Sinks or Endo Steel that would be assigned to the
more elite warriors of the MHAF. The first Mech to leave the production lines was the DEC-01
Decurion, followed a year later by the MRU-MH Marius. In late 3065, the Marian Hegemony
admitted defeat on the PTO-01 Praetorian and LGN-01 Legionnaire designs, and sought outside
aid. Somewhat surprisingly, the Marian Hegemony turned to Dante Enterprises, a small startup
firm in the Draconis Combine that specialized in upgrading older designs with new
technology. DE promptly went to work on the Praetorian, and recently finished work on the
Legionnaire.
Capabilities:
DE decided to base the design of the Legionnaire on two proven Mechs, the Wolfhound and the
Draconis Combines own Panther. DE elected to mount no Jump Jets on the Legionnaire, greatly
simplifying maintenance and usage, but limiting its abilities when compared to standard
Light BattleMechs deployed through the rest of the Inner Sphere.
The Legionnaires two primary weapons, a Large and Medium laser, are hallmarks of the new
series of BattleMechs. The Large Laser provides the Legionnaire with an impressive punch for
so small a machine, and backed up by the Medium Laser it also wields, allows the Mech to
fight on for as long as necessary, as these two primary weapons require no ammunition.
For long-range engagements, the Legionnaire is also equipped with an LRM-5. Although this
weapon is capable of inflicting only mediocre damage, its excellent range and economy of
ammunition usage made it the ideal finishing touch for the Legionnaire, allowing it to fight
well at any range.
With full armor plating for its size, as well as impressive speed, the Legionnaire is
capable of evading larger and more dangerous opponents, whilst still being capable of
surviving hits from powerful weapons. Combined with the standard Fusion Engine used by the
design, it has impressive survivability and capabilities, even on a modern battlefield where
it may be dismissed as obsolete.
The only real problem faced by pilots of the Legionnaire is its rather limited Heat Sink
array. Due to the mass of equipment used for other systems, technicians were unable to fit
any additional Heat Sinks to the design, meaning that it can easily run hot if its pilot
insists on using its weapons to excess. Carefully handled, however, the design offers good
options at any range.
Deployment:
Intended to serve as the primary scouting and fast-response unit in the MHAF, the
Legionnaires late deployment has forced the MHAF to re-evaluate its plans. Although it is
being deployed to these roles, the MHAF command echelons have realized that the strike power
of the Legionnaire allows it to serve on the battle line, and its limited dependence on
ammunition and high speed allows it to serve as an excellent skirmisher unit. Commanders are
increasingly requisitioning Legionnaires to serve as mobile reserve cadres rather than for
its intended primary roles.
Variants:
The LGN-02 Legionnaire is a powerful, high-tech machine that is on par with some newer Inner
Sphere scout Mechs. Upgrading to Endo Steel structure and Ferro-Fibrous Armour, and using
Double Heat Sinks, the new design also features a Beagle Active Probe and Guardian ECM
Suite. The Large Laser is updated to a Combine-produced Nickel Alloy ER Large Laser, and the
LRM system is removed in favor of dual Medium Lasers. All the Medium Lasers are moved and
housed in a triple mounting around the Legionnaires left arm. These modifications add almost
another 25% to the cost of the Legionnaire, but the capabilities of the new package has made
it an instant favorite with the few pilots allowed to take to the field in the new machine.
Dante Enterprises manufactures the more advanced chassis and electronics equipment on
Loysville, then exports the unequipped frame to the Marian Hegemony for final fitting.
