Overview:
Originally designed in 3038, along with several other designs, to replace the aging Dragon
BattleMech. The Celestial Dragon was narrowly beaten by the Grand Dragon, which is still
used in great numbers by the Draconis Combine to this day.
Although the Celestial Dragon was shelved, it appears the then-future Coordinator, Theodore
Kurita, had different ideas for his new breed of Dragon.
Capabilities:
Similar to the Grand Dragon, the Celestial Dragon is powered by a Hermes 360 extra-light
engine, allowing it to run at speeds over 95 kph, which is something of a rarity for a heavy
'Mech. The Celestial Dragon also carries more armor, beefing up the chest, arms and legs,
but leaving the back a little more exposed.
Despite being put on the shelf, Theodore Kurita allowed a few of his new Dragons to be
manufactured, for testing purposes only. Some commanders were shocked to find out, this also
referred to battlefield testing as well. Although quite capable of going head to head with
'Mechs of similar size, the Celestial Dragon was beginning to fit into the role of
"scout-hunter".
Able to close with most light and medium 'Mechs, the Celestial Dragon could then bring it's
primary weapon, a Blakenburg LB 10-X autocannon, to quickly shred the rear armor of it's
rapidly retreating quarry. Any opponent, which chose to stand against the Celestial Dragon,
were quickly overpowered by three Victory Starfire medium lasers and an accurate Artemis IV
assisted Totschlagen SRM-4 rack. If an enemy were (un)fortunate enough to survive this
fusillade, the Celestial Dragon could always call in support from it's other C3-equipped
lance mates. Most of which were often Spiders or Whitworths.
Variants:
During battlefield tests, several variants were introduced. Of which, the EB50-B replaces
the SRM-4, Artemis IV FCS and ammo with four jump jets, mounted in the upper torso. Giving
the Celestial Dragon better maneuverability in urban and mountainous environs. The EB50-C
also removes the SRM launcher, upgrading the lasers to pulse versions, and adding a small
pulse laser to the left arm. A third variant, the EB50-D, replaces the LB 10-X with an Ultra
AC/5 with two tons of ammo. CASE is installed into the right and left torso locations, while
another medium laser is added to the right arm.
