Scenario:

It's war.

The battlefield is fluid, and so the party is given their orders: go to a particular sector, hit what they can, and squeal on what they can't.

As fate would have it, the OPFOR in that sector is mostly green soldiers with older and less reliable equipment. As a result, the party does a *lot* of damage over a series of short engagements.

Problem is, the more the party hits, the deeper they unwittingly get into enemy territory. They're now further behind enemy lines than they know, and the OPFOR has for obvious reasons made it a point to squash them flat.

Cue the party having to figure out where to go from here.

How would your party react to such a scenario / campaign?

What kind of veteran commander doesn't know the location of his forces in relation to a large enemy force that he's been continuously attacking?

In the original "Team Yankee" novel, when Yankee breaches deep into the Soviet flank, the only unit that the Soviets have to try and dislodge them with is a green - at - the - gills mechanized infantry unit. Yankee takes some casualties in the fighting, but by and large the young and inexperienced Soviets get destroyed as a unit; there's even a scene where an enlisted soldier guns down the unit's propaganda officer just so they can say he was killed in the fighting and so they had no clear orders.

I envisioned this as something comparable: things are bad, and so a relatively green unit - the party - is dispatched in a Hail Mary to open up a new flank. They're far more successful than anyone imagined they'd be, and now they're neck deep in trouble.

That's the exact opposite to what your first post says.
