Overview:
Looking back to help themselves move forward, the new GRF-4AMHX builds off the original
GRF-1A Griffin rather than its later descendants. This allowed the Marian Hegemony to create
a new heavy BattleMech to help fill their ranks, but without unduly extending the design and
development period.
Capabilities:
Using the 60 ton base frame of the GRF-1A, the primary goals for this project were to
improve the original model?s ground speed and mobility, as well as its surviveability and
firepower.
Switching from the primitive frame, engine, jump jets and armor freed up massive amounts of
mass. This allowed a larger long-range missile launcher that fires 15 missiles at a time to
be installed in place of the five-rack previously used. Three full tons of ammunition feed
this weapon, allowing up to four minutes of continual fire. The Prototype PPC was likewise
replaced by the more advanced Heavy PPC, which runs just as hot as the original weapon, and
has the same range, but hits half again as hard. The small laser mounted alongside this
massive weapon is basically an afterthought.
The primitive armor has been replaced with 10.5 tons of more modern ferro-fibrous plating.
This provides a thick hide of protection that can withstand a great deal of punishment
before failing. As an added precaution, the ammunition bays for the missiles have a CASE
system installed. Although an ammo explosion will still render the unit combat ineffective,
the pilot will still be partially protected, and the BattleMech can be salvaged.
The problem with the original goals for this project where that once the first two goals of
improved firepower and protection were achieved, the goal of improved speed and mobility
seemed beyond reach. However, Marian scientists managed to unlock the secrets of the
earliest form of extra-light engines and double heat sinks. Although the engine runs hotter
than a standard model, it managed to conserve enough mass that a large enough fusion core
could be installed to push this 60 ton machine up to over 86 kph at a run. This also allowed
the jump jet system to be improved so that the BattleMech can leap up to 150 meters at a
time. This allows it to match most of its medium-weight counterparts in mobility and ground
speed.
Deployment:
Testing of this new model is still ongoing, but a few early units are getting field trials
in the more prestigious legions.
