Overview
The Caravan has always been around since the dawn of the Star League and serves a very important purpose for those who deploy Utility Mechs, or those that use ICE engines in BattleMechs, however rare they might be. The Caravan is how one refuels an ICE powered machine in the field.
However, the Caravan has never been very popular, many argue, rightly, that it is far easier, and noticibly cheaper to simply a fuel truck. Its easier to train drivers to handle double clutching then it is to train them to pilot a Utility Mech! Yet the Caravan remains in use.
Capabilities
The reason for the continued, if limited, deployment for the Caravan is because of its flexability, it is not simply a refueling unit, it also acts as a scanvanger and rescue machine. With a powerful search light, easily adaptable communication systems and tracking systems to fulfill the employeers need, and nearly seven tons of available space make the Caravan unique among all Utility Mechs in production. Its two fully articulate hands also add to this continued use.
Not only that, but the fuel pods can also be filled with other liquids: water, foam, and even napalm to make it a one shot weapon in a pinch. In all of these rolls a Utility Mech
performs very well, making it a general service machine that can be used in a wide variety
of jobs and functions, far cheaper then having to buy seperatly for each one.
Deployment
Caravan's are deployed all across the Inner Sphere. They are exceedingly rare, far rarer then any other Utility Mech. Not many were produced during the Star League, and most of those were canabilized for parts. Though SOME have been produced since the rise of the new Star League, they are mostly privately owned, bought by exceedingly rich people who like the novelty of the design. Most people do with what is already around. To sum up: VERY RARE.
