'Mechs may be the focus of the game, but other units can match up surprisingly well. I have a cousin I taught to play and he only uses tank. Laugh if you want, but he routinely knocked the crap outta me every time I played him. Since then, I've been using a lot more combined arms units. I wanted to know how many other people do, and if anyone uses more of one particular service branch than 'Mechs?

Even if all of your actual tabletop playing is with just mechs, you'd better have some vehicles and troops along for the ride even if they're only there to stand guard duty.

"But sarge, we're surrounded and trapped in this basement with a lance of mechs parked outside. What are we gonna do?"

"That's easy, kid. We sit here and wait. Sooner or later those mechwarriors are going to climb out of those things. And then we'll waste them."

I agree. Combined arms is generally best. I just dont get to play that way to to time and space limitations. And Tanks are brutal if you set up your lances right. Send in the fast short range buggers and then support with your Schreks and Alacorns with a couple Demolishers as support for them. Ive used tanks in a couple of battles and have always fared better than with mechs.

I love combined arms. Esp with strafing/bombing Aerofighters. Problem is most of the time I play now is at cons and players really just want to run mechs.

I play combined arms as well.

I use small, fast vehicle scouts to go well ahead of all my forces to get a general picture of the battlefield. Then come the light Mechs. Then, depending on the mission and terrain, and the enemy layout, comes either a Mech or tank unit, reinforced with Mech infantry. Artillery is used to pound suspected and located enemy positions prior to any troops attacking, and fighter and attack helo support for the troops on the objective.

I basically fight according to modern day doctrine and have found that it actually works well, (even though Mechs aren't standard issue today! )

I rarely actually play combined arms, usually just a star or lance of 'Mechs against a similar force. I actually prefe r it, but since I don't play very often, I settle for what's easiest.
