Overview:
"So. After centuries of secrecy we finally have a breach."
GaKhan Patrick Johnston paused and felt the door swish closed behind him as the accusation
hung in the air.
Marshal Elliot Towel, Commander of quadrant 3 Inner Periphery Sectors, either missed or
chose to ignore the pause as he continued his tirade, "And to my great and utter amazement
its your people who decided that the rules don't apply to them. A great irony considering
how important the rules become when you want something. So tell me Galaxy Commander. What
is going on."
GaKhan Patrick Johnston blinked at the vitriol in the Marshal's voice before responding,
"First of all, under Clause 14..."
"Section 23 of the Unified code of conduct, blah blah blah, Excessive tonal connotation in
language is limited to... I know the Regs. You're trying to tell me I can't talk to you
like this, and now I'll tell you my rule 1. Cut the crap, and get on with it. What is
going on with your Star Commander."
Blinking again at being so abruptly cut off, Freebirths are so rude, GaKhan Patrick Johnston
continued, "And Second. I do not know what you mean. My only Star Commander on a mission
right now is Star Commander Clarisa Johnston. She is suppose to be observing a build up of
both Inner Sphere and Clan force on Blair Atholl."
"Oh she's observing all right. Watch this." Elliot turned towards the rooms main vision
wall as a holo appeared showing a short star of light mechs being cut down by a swarm of
fast moving drones. The scene cut to a far away shot of a wooded area surrounding a dirt
mound with small motes moving around it.
"We collected these from HPG broadcasts being sent out to all sides of this event. Its the
only reason we're aware that this Clarisa is way past any point she should of been
authorized to reach, so I want you GaKhan to explain to me, what is going on! Especially
since She seems to of hyper resonance pulsed the ley line we would normally use to send in
an extraction team."
Extraction team; that would mean IPD's 13th, and they were not known for leaving witnesses.
Secrecy was the only thing that preserved the psychodynamic balance. If the rest of
humanity learned what happened in the deep periphery, they could prove to be a distraction
at just the wrong moment, and the race would be lost. And there was his great grand
daughter, roughly speaking of course, displaying technology the likes of which no one in the
core worlds had access. Admittedly the drones were within reach for both sides, but that
mound was telling. She was using a Translation Field. If anyone caught on, it could lead
to serious consequences to the psychodynamic equations and the future that was trying to be
crafted. But there was a reason for Clarisa's actions, maybe not the smartest or most well
thought out of reasons, but a good one none the less.
GaKhan Patrick Johnston answered the question, "Honor is happening Sir!"
Capabilities:
"This is a bad idea Star commander." said a large older mechwarrior as he stood next to a
holotable.
"Nonsense." said the youth on the other side of the table, "This isn't a bad Idea. It's
crazy. And Stupid."
"Is Not. It Is. A Clansmen Does Not use contractions." Said the tall blond working the
holotanks controls. "And why is it a bad idea Simon?"
"Because you are overcompensating Star Commander."
"I'm not a Clansmen!"
"You used your superior technology to win the trial of refusal that allows us to participate
in this"
"Just because I'm related to Mhphw"
" event" continued Simon having just reached over and silenced the youth with a massive hand
over his face, " but now your desire to be accepted by the other clans present means you are
pushing too hard to underbid them."
Simon released the youth, having used most of his quota of words for the day. He earned a
glare for his efforts before the youth returned to the woman. "And it's still Stupid.
You're taking a perfectly good Clockwork Pawn, Ripping out most of it's C3 system to make
room for a cockpit, and then replacing the weapons with this inferior."
"Stop" Interrupted the Blond, "So long as we are here on this mission, you are not to make
reference to anything used when we are at home."
"Fine. It's still Crap though, plus you're a great commander, but I'm not sure if you're
thinking right when it comes to dueling. The clockwork are intended to be used as a group.
What weakness one has, is made up for by having friends cover the blind spots. You don't
get that kind of support in a duel."
"Contractions!" Hissed the Blonde.
"Peter Karrige is correct." added Simon. "In addition there are some additional points to
consider. First, the missiles available are not the smart ones you are used to. They are
most limited. Line of Sight only unless you are able to hand them off to a forward spotter,
which would be dishonorable. Second, though the Clans prefer a minimalist approach, they
are also proud of their technological might. Not using any of the tools available to you is
as bad as using too many."
"The missiles don't home! How do these people manage to fight each other?" wailed the
blonde.
"Contractions Clarisa, a true born warrior of the mighty clan Mongoose must always use
proper English" a gloating Peter said in a singsong voice.
"Shut up and help you idiot." retorted Clarisa.
"We made do." calmly replied Simon. "Mostly with more direct fire weapons, especially
energy weapons. I have an Idea. It should be cheap but able to surprise a few people. If
you will let me Star Commander?"
Clarisa backed away from the control board of the holotable, Simon replaced her and began
talking to the computer. A low slung shape took form on the table, an amalgamation of
several battlemechs, The software filled in details while gross details were manipulated by
the Mechwarrior at the controls. Coolant and power paths shifted as weapon systems were
added or removed. The overall shape of the mech shifted as the computer compensated for mass
instabilities brought on by the demands of its biotic master. An outline of design specs
was approved and then tested. The results feeding into another permutation of the concept
and tested again, until eventually the creator was satisfied.
"That design is sub optimal." complained Peter. "increasing the tonnage gives both greater
firepower and protection. Plus we could sneak in some AI enhancements for better uh...
Pilot compensation."
"You doubt my piloting ability." growled Clarisa.
"Peter Karrige is correct. You are not upto the task of matching these warriors on their
field of battle. A touch of enhancement to even the odds may be in order. He is also
correct that this mech is sub optimal. A maximum effort could produce a much heavier and
better equipped battlemech with fully realized technology use. And by this same logic I
could of introduced a Heavy Battlemech to fight Light and Medium mechs. But he failed to
consider two things. First this is only the beginning. We must have patience and conserve
our resources for the battle ahead. Comstar taught us this on Tukayyid. And the second
thing is Honor."
Notable MechWarriors:
"Ultimate Nightmare of Wizards of the Coast Legal Services?" You named the Star after a
card in a game no one has played for over a thousand years?"
"That is not quite right Peter. I played it. And so did most of my Sybkith. So There."
Clarisa stuck out her tongue to emphasis her point.
"Still, that's a mouthful, and it's just going to alienate the other clans even more. They
already are extremely unhappy with your argument for being allowed to join. Only reason I
think they did allow it is because it was cheaper then sending another star of mechs after
you"
Clarisa's mood darkened a bit, "I know. Clan Mongoose, Clan of rules lawyers who would
rather fight with words then honor. It is hardly my fault that we are just a touch more OCD
about rules and how they should be applied then others. And I am trying to change that
perception, It is just that they rushed me and I had to react and..."
She took in a calming breath. "In any case, that is why I allowed the Interview. Things
are about to get bad, the math proves it, and It is not right for us to hang back in the
shadows. We need to help. And this plan was the only one I could think of that would allow
us to introduce ourselves without tipping the balance of fear, paranoia and greed on the
equations. In any case, the interview is about to show"
Clarisa settled back into the bed, as the vision wall opened to a scene of Clarisa sitting
in a chair with the back side of the host visible in the forground. Credits scrolled
briefly and then the interview began.
