Overview:
Refitted from field salvage after a disastrous operation by the 5th North Star Free Company
against Clan Ghost Bear on Utrecht, the Hugin is a PXH-3M refitted with gear recovered from
the company's mech casualties as a command mech for then-Lieutenant Joakim Nambu, the
company's only surviving officer.
Due to irreparable damage, the Right Arm ER Large Laser was pulled in favor of a
pistol-mounted ER PPC recovered from a fallen Griffin-3M from the Command Lance, sacrificing
some firepower in exchange for better range and heat management. Its Martell Spitfire
Medium Pulse Laser and LFN Linblad Shotgun AMS were retained, though the ammo supply was
reduced to one ton. The Left Arm was severed during the battle and was rebuilt with a
pistol-mounted Defiance P5M recovered from the Scout Lance's wrecked Wasp-1S. A spare LFN
Linblad machine gun was furnished from the reserve parts store. The resulting weight
savings of these changes are used to mount the electronic warfare suite of the Scout Lance's
Raven-3L. Its Guardian ECM Suite is mounted in the Center Torso, while the internal
structure was re-arranged to make room for the Beagle Active Probe in the Right Torso. The
last piece is the Raven's TAG, which is Head mounted.
Lieutenant Nambu used his rebuilt Phoenix Hawk "Rook" to lead the company's remnants to
complete their strikes against their targets, and was subsequently promoted to Captain for
his efforts. The publicly available record of the contract statement is exceedingly vague
about the main objective, though it was officially issued by the Free Rasalhague Republic.
Capabilities:
Built to reclaim essential functions from destroyed mechs, the Rook carries a Raven's EW and
Sigint capabilities, arms itself with an ER PPC to increase its maximum range, and mounts a
TAG to designate targets. It retains its ability to function as a Command Mech and its
Improved Communications suite benefits from being linked to its ECM suite. The ER PPC and
Left Arm Medium Pulse Laser are both Jettison Capable, though the utility of this is dubious
until battle damage is sustained. Though the systems are a bit unusual for a Phoenix Hawk,
it still benefits from the Ubiquitous distribution of its spare parts.
While an ECM suite improves the survivability of a command mech and its lance, the inclusion
of the TAG and Active Probe suggest that the Raven's target designation capabilities were
essential to the mission's completion, as they force the mech to take more risks to use
them.
Deployment:
After successfully completing its mission, the Phoenix Hawk "Rook" was designated for
leading small strike lances against strategic targets. Debate exists within the North Star
Free Army on whether this design should be classified as a striker with secondary scout
capabilities, an anti-scout that can designate artillery targets, or as a self-escorting
scout. At least one other Phoenix Hawk have since been refitted into this pattern, though
they remain anomalous one-offs.
Variants:
The mech is a variant of the Phoenix Hawk, particularly the PXH-3M. No derivative designs
have emerged as of 3057, though everyone to pilot the machine has ambitions of capturing a
Clan ER PPC for the 50% improvement in effective energy on target while retaining the same
waste heat output as an Inner Sphere spec ER PPC.
