To keep everyone busy, I'm going to do something similar to Slythis. I've lost my Griffin and so I'm in a position to consider what 'Mech I should equip my character with. I've got the following priorities that SHOULD be met, though I don't think any are so important they can't be tossed aside with a good excuse.
1) "I like going fast."
As commander of the 17th Recon Battalion -- which is generally sent to work with the 302nd Federated Light Armor Regiment -- I end up fighting mobile battles with some of the most maneuverable machines in the Inner Sphere. At least a 5/8 curve would be best.
2) "I like a variety of weapons."
I like a variety of weapons -- ballistic, missile, and laser -- preferably in range "layers", similar to the Stalker, Timber Wolf and so on.
3) "I like living."
I would greatly prefer designs with Light or Standard engines and CASE if they have ammo fed weapons with more than a few shots. XLs will be considered if I think they meet most of the other requirements.
4) "Advanced tech is not a must have..."
Although I enjoy advanced tech, and will probably alter the machine for some advanced weapons if it's Level 1, I don't NEED Streaks, Artemis, Ultras, Pulse or even ER weapons. In fact, I enjoy the character of machines that are "Level 1 1/2" field versions.
5) "Hands are useful."
I like hand actuators simply because I get more options for fighting. I can punch, club, climb, carry and so on.
6) "Odd objects attract fire. I'm already odd enough..."
This one definately needs an explanation. I tend to make a big enough target of myself so I'd prefer to not advertise my rank as an officer. I'll shy away from "famous" command 'Mechs simply because they get targetted first. Also, I prefer to pilot machines in the same weight class as the rest of my battalion, so I won't consider assault and only a "light" heavy 'Mech.
Well, that's all I can think of. Let's see what you 'Mech Maniacs come up with.
(EDIT: Removed the "Knock Out Weapon" requirement. I'll have some other machine in the lance provide it.)

Well, I can make excuses for why I have non-Davion 'Mechs so knock yourself out. I'll go take a look at it, 'cause I'm not familiar with it off the top of my head.

A few ideas:
1. Shadow Hawk. Both the 3025 and 3050 ones move 5/8/4. They all have a mix of ranges and weapons types. However, the 300 one has ammo in the center torso. I've roughly sketched out a varient if you want to hear about it. It's a common multi-use mech.
2. 4D Rifleman. The 4D is entirely energy-based, so it has no ammo to worry about. It moves only 4/6 tho. However, its energy weapons give good range. You get twin PPCs, twin large lasers, and twin mediums. However, the relative lack of heat sinks means that you have to exercise fire discipline (PPCs for long-range, lasers for medium and short). Generally, the Rifleman is seen as an anti-air unit, so you might not be the first choice as a target.
3. 3050 Charger. It still goes 5/8, but has thicker armor and a much heavier weapons array. Most see this mech as a joke due to how pitiful the 3025 version was. However, since it's a Combine unit you may get some odd looks- so just say it's captured.
4. Raptor. It lacks hands, but as an omni you can put them and much more on. Also, it has 11 tons of pod space IIRC.

How about an Ostroc/Ostsol? Does anyone have any thoughts on those 'Mechs or a reason they shouldn't be added to the running?

Ugly as sin and no hands. Other then that I don't see why not! However, they are odd enough they might attract fire. Not many people know what they do, therefore they attract attention.
You don't want attention. i'd say stick with a 3025 unit or variant. Phoenix Hawk, Shadow Hawk, Wolverine (my favorite, there is a variant with a PPC added on), another Griffin, or even a Valkeryie or Assassin.

Ostroc:
I don't see any real concerns here, BUT I do not really like the fact that it only has 9 tons of armor. Plus the fact that I has a slight heat problem at long range. 2 large lasers and only 15 single heat sinks (2C/D/L/M varients). I really don't like the 3C variant. The tonnage that went ot the extra Large Laser should have gone to Armor and maybe a medium laser or something. 4C Variant I am really confused about. I can't figure out where the 3 tons form the SRM-4 and 1 ton of ammo went form the 2C variant. THe only other difference is that the 4C variant has Ferro-Fibrous armor, but still only 9 tons of armor. What happened to those 3 tons?
I'd say go with the 4L variant. Gardian ECM will help keep you alive a little longer, plus the only heat you really need to worry about generating is when you jump. Though the Endo steel, Stealth armor and ER lasers make it expensive and hard to repair.
Ostsol:
4D is a good way to go if you like old tech, at range only heat is from movement, otherwise very similar to old Tech Ostroc. 4F don't even bother looking at, way too much heat. Ideally you can only afford to fire 1 of 2 PPCs at a time. 5D, either it is underweight or my version in Heavy Metal is wrong. So add Armor or heat sinks or both. THey should ave used Endo as well, plenty of space and thy could have added more heat sinks or armor then too. Basically not a well thought out design. I could have used Endo steel, all but maxed out the amror and added 3 more heat sinks. 5M, is not too bad, pulse lasers, and an Anti-missle system, but still under armored, IMO, but 16 double heat sinks is a good thing. 6D, I can not find a fault with at all. Max Armor, good amount of heat sinks, TSM, and a TC. The 7M is also a solid design. 8M is ok at best, I don't really care for the unmatched weapons on it, doesn't fit withthe rest of the variants, but plenty of heat sinks, no heat build-up up close, and minimal at range. Plus it moves 6(7)/9(11), thanks to its TSM.
Overall these are decent, but not great choices. Some much better than others, and some just don't make any sense at all. ubt most are under armored for my taste as a Command Mech.

How about the mech I'm using for Mordel's sudden impact? Charger SA5.
4/6 but has masc to get that extra speed when needed
2 streak sixes, 3 er mediums
LB 20x for the punch
not typically noted as a command mech
heavily armored with light engine and case
yeah it's an assault, but barely...
2 hands
looks kewl and is made by the combine (captured, yeah that's it) which always has the best machines.

Actuallly, I should think that that's the Steiner version of a Capellan machine.
The Capellans originally designed a machine very similar to the SA5, the 1A5 in the 4th War.
The weapons and engine make it seem very Steiner, and the "S"A5 is also what I take to be a clue. If it was the KA5, I might be more tempted to side with you on that one.
Sorry for going off on a tangent.

I think the first question to ask is, what year is your character playing in? 67? 50? 25? etc

I started playing around in Heavy Metal, editing designs to see what I liked (most likely I'll make at least a few small changes to anything I pilot) and here's what I got:
BattleMech Technical Readout
Type/Model: Champion ¨Recon¨
Tech: Inner Sphere / 2750
Config: Biped BattleMech
Rules: Level 2, Modified design

CASE Equipment: LT 1 .50
--------------------------------------------------------
TOTALS: 20 65 60.00
Crits & Tons Left: 13 .00
Calculated Factors:
Total Cost: 9,607,200 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,257
Cost per BV: 7,642.96
Weapon Value: 1,531 / 1,478 (Ratio = 1.22 / 1.18)

BattleForce2: MP: 5, Armor/Structure: 5/4
Damage PB/M/L: 5/4/-, Overheat: 0
Class: MH; Point Value: 13
Okay, I think maybe I should drop the Artemis. It doesn't go over the top on new-tech but with the classic AC/10 I can mix and match some ammo for my mission. And this isn't exactly a design that screams "Commander!". If I shield the new ER laser, it would look just like the 3025 version. I could also throw this sort of weaponry on a Griffin. Thoughts?

No prob, you're absolutely right! For some reason I always equate the Charger with the DC. It's probably because one of my favorite novel scenes is where the Chargers appear when the davs are attacking in the War of '39. Ardan Sortek and his lance aren't too worried, thinking all they have are small lasers, then the lrms come down on them something fierce. Ha Ha. (and then again, even those designs came from Comstar, duh!)

Ah, the War of 3039. Your DCMS certainly humbled us then. I wasn't involved in that conflict, but I'd like to think I've learned some things from it anyway.
