Third party company in the interstellar commo business?
Would this give the universe something else or not? Would it add more a cutthroat feel to the universe to have the main commo groups battling amongs themselves and being aggressive in their dealings with the other IS powers as for who get's what as far as Interstellar commo goes?
Would like to hear your thoughts and ideas on this...looking for ideas on how to set this up and make it fit and how to keep it balanced at the same time...

Do you mean like AT&T? And, how soon would the competition set in? Early in the HPG days, or later in the timeline, say 3050?

Sorta like AT&T and MCI and Sprint etc...on an off hand guess I would say this would come about during the SL time frame or later say right after the start of the Succession Wars...

If it's right after the Succession Wars started, I can't see them being able to even get started. Comstar had to hard a hold on HPG technology. If they managed to develop their own system, such as the FedSuns Fax machines, then, as long as they ran solely as a business, and not interdict those nations with agendas contrary to their own... sure, I think they could have been really popular with the leaders of the Houses. I mean, the ability to back up communications networks between systems? They'd think that was the greatest thing since K-F drives!

I think you could make an interesting scenerio in the HPG-Wars
I mean....maybe 1 or 2 campaighs...one for each faction. Prolly more of a Mechwarrior set of scenarios though.

I think it would be a good thing. It would mark your campaign as uniquely yours. It would be interesting to see what the successor houses would think of the Comstar edict once an upstart with a new technolgy proves that messages are getting altered, or not arriving at all.
There is all sorts of roleplay fodder there. What special thing can you do with the way an HPG is coded onto the carrier wave? right now it is like am radio. a set of amplitude pulses are packaged and sent. What if there is a way to imprint the "wrapper". or even create several frequencies and modulate them. Much more info could be sent per package right?
What would Comstar do to either keep up, or snuff out the "heretic"?
