OK, I'm stumped. Why the change? Because no other standard player race had bard as a default? If gnomes tend to be Lawful Good (or at least they used to: I hope this isn't another change like what happened to halflings between 2nd Ed and 3rd Ed), then that would conflict with bard being their favored class, since bards can't be lawful under 3rd ed (unless they are changing that as well).
I'll wait until the 3.5 books come out for final judgement, but this change smells like a stinker to me.

Gnomes are usually neutral good...not lawful good...the lawful good race would be the dwarves...

I'm probably still thinking 2nd ed then, if I was even right about the alignments then. I guess I just don't like the player races being tinkered with the way they changed the halflings; it created all sorts of inconsistencies. I still can't figure out why they shifted the predominant alignment of drow from chaotic evil to neutral evil, especially since Lolth is supposed to be a deity that loves chaos and demands it of her followers.

It also bugged me that in almost every bock about the Drow, that have a code that they follow. That sounds awfully like Lawful Evil to me.
Maybe Lloth changed, now she's the Goddess of Pain??? ... Nah.....
