From ESPN.com
Quote:

IRVING, Texas -- Vijay Singh made birdies on the 15th and 16th holes Sunday to win the Byron Nelson Championship, ending a week that began with criticism over his comments about Annika Sorenstam.
Singh then said he would not play at the Colonial in Texas next week, when Sorenstam will become the first woman to play on the men's tour since Babe Zaharias, who qualified for the 1945 Los Angeles Open.
Singh said his decision to withdraw had nothing to do with Sorenstam. He said he promised his wife he would take the week off if he won the Byron Nelson.
The rest...

IMO this is very high on the bullshit meter....

No matter what you feel about Annika Sorenstam playing a PGA tour event it shows what kind of person Vijay Singh is...and he is a f---in' coward.

I don't about coward, but he is certainly inconsistent. He started out saying that if he were paired with her he would quit the tournament. Then he said he had nothing against her personally. Now he's saying he won't even show up. Maybe his real problem is that he fears she might beat his score. _________________ "Those who beat their guns into plows will plow for those with guns..." -Thomas Jefferson

He's obviously a chauvanist. (did I spell that right?). Hey, I don't believe woman belong on the men's tour anymore than I think men belong on the womans tour. But if someone wants to give her an exemption to play, that's their business. Personally, I hope she does very well at the tournament and makes the cut. Could only do more great things for the game. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

I have to agree. I have been wondering whey the MENS tours is suddenly getting blurred from the WOMENS tour. I have no problem with her competing in it. Im just curious as to why this is happening in the first place..

It is not the Men's tour, it is The Professional Golfers' Association tour. Any player, regardless of gender, that qualifies for a PGA tour event can play. Sponsors of each event are allowed 5(?) exemptions to allow players that do not qualify under PGA guidlines to play.
There is a Ladies Professional Golfers' Association tour that is exclusively for woman and I have no issue with that being exclusively female.
There was a guy at work in the last few days that said Annika Sorenstam had no business playing on the PGA tour.
So I asked him would there be any issue with Arnold Palmer getting an exemption. He said 'no'.
Gary Player? "No"
Jack Nickulas? "No"
Lee Travino? "No"
I then pointed out that Sorenstam is now a much better golfer than those legends are right now.
He had no response.

I listen to Rush Limbaugh a lot at work and got to listen to a pretty good discussion about this. It seems that the Lady Pro in question has become so good there aren't really any other Women Pros that could give her a regular run for her money. That's why she wants to move to the Men's Tour like Babe Diedrickson Zaharias did back in I think the 1930s (and apparently no other woman has done since then). This is all well and good if she can hit off the Men's pro tees and keep up with them scorewise.
But it seems she may not be able to do that. It is down to biology, something about a man's muscles being able to achieve greater clubhead speed or some such thing. The average male pro is hitting the ball 50 yards farther off the tee then the average women pros are doing. In other words, when the man is making a short chip shot to the green, she'll be out there in the fairway still some distance from the green and using a long iron instead of a 7-9 iron. That automatically makes it that much harder for a woman to put that ball into the hole in the same number of strokes as the men can do when she starts hitting the ball from the same spot the man started from, instead of from the women's tee (which I would say are often at good 25 yards or more forward of that).
That she is playing with an exemption is cool. The tournament sponsor invited her as they have the right to invite anybody they please to play in their tournament, even me. The real question is whether after this can she hit the ball well enough to give real competition to the men and earn her way onto the regular tour while standing on level ground with them, having to meet the same standard of play.
If she can, cheers for her. If she can't forget about other women Pros trying it too, they already can't outshoot Annika as it is. If the Lady flops at this, we'll probably have to wait another generation to see another women golfer who is good enough to give it a fair try. _________________ "Those who beat their guns into plows will plow for those with guns..." -Thomas Jefferson

She doesn't want to play regularly on the PGA tour because she knows her abilities are not good enough for that.
She has said that several times...

You better yourself by playing your peers and your betters. Let her better herself, and bring her up to another level.... .
Finally something pleasant to watch on the men's tour...

It is often refewred to as the "Mens'" amd "Ladies'" tours, but there is no "Mens'". It is the PGA Tour they play on.
