Most bands have that one song that is what they are known for. People may not know th eband itself...but they know THAT song. In many cases, the band cant stand playing that song, etc. It is usually not their best, but they get suckered into it all the time....sucks for them...
Some bands its hard to pick out, like The Beatles and Aerosmith...I'll try and narrow it to 1 or 2
The List Please
Led Zeppelin
Stairway to Heaven
Pink Floyd
Another Brick in the Wall Part 2
The Doors
Light My Fire or Break on Through
Queen
We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions
David Bowie
Space Oddity
The Eagles
Hotel California
Black Sabbath
Iron Man
Thats WHat I can come up with for Classic Rock. I dont know enough The Who, Rolling Stones and others to name anything.
More Modern
Metallica
Enter Sandman
Pearl Jam
Jeremy
Nirvana
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Europe
The Final Countdown
Well...as for modern stuff...whatever you hear on the radio is that song....but there are usually more than just the one song now...
Feel free to add

Don't confuse a band's biggest "hit" with a cliche song.
Most of the songs on both of those lists aren't even the songs those bands are famous for...as for the "one hit wonders" listed they should be happy people care about them at all.

Actually, some bands people think are one-hit wonders actually continue to chart in other nations even after their US runs are over. For example, a-ha continued to successfully tour Europe until 1994 when they made the decision to break up.

If they have one hit in the US, then here they are a "one hit wonder".
