Well after months of searching I have found BattleTech campaign that sounds promising enough for me to sign up for. And as such I'm in need of some help putting my unit together.
Starting Rules are as follows:
1) I have 600 tons to work with to choose Mechs, VTOLs, Areospace, Armor and Infantry to start my merc unit.
2) Must field at least 12 units (Minimum Company Strength)
3) Infantry can be slected and count as 20 tons and equal 1 mech/unit for the minimum of 12 units.
4) Each Merc Unit has a Union CLass Drop Ship for transportation.
4) The campaign is Set in 3048, but 3050 tech is available.
I'm looking to build a combined arms unit centered around a Medium Mech Lance or 2. Units need to move a minimum of 5/8. A jump capable lance is preferred, but not required.

Are there any restrictions by way of equipment or what percentage has to be 3050 and what percentage is 3025? How about piloting skills?

Nope. Pilots will have either Gunnery/Piloting skills of 3/4 or 4/3 to start.

Good suggestion, but I'm looking ofr a combined arms unit, with infantry and armor.

4 Maultier Hover APC

4 Platoons SRM Infantry
Any help? I picked same-type lances for logistics reasons, less different spare parts to order. If the XLs look scary you can always pick older variants of the PXH and WVR mechs. They're solid merc material. The fighters are mostly meant for recon and quick bomb raids, so I picked fast ones.

Not a bad idea.
In addition I found out this afternoon, that I cna "upgrade some mechs" for example I can replace all single heat sinks in my older 3025 mechs with double heatsinks, which make many older variants much much more attractive.

ok after carefull deliberation and quick calculating, and lastly just giving it that merc feel... i give you my choices.

Recon Lance:
Stinger STG-5M

2 Foot Infantry Platoons
Skirmish Lance:
Scorpion Light Tank
Plainsman Medium Hovertank
Striker Light Tank
Vedette Medium Tank
Support Units:
Karnov UR Transport
Mobile Long Tom Artillery
Close Air Support:
Cavalry Attack Helicopter
Yellow Jacket Gunship
Weight: 600tons
That should fit in a Union. You might need to do some creative packing but you can get it.
All the vehicles are ICE, all the mechs use Standard Armor, and alot of parts are interchangable.
If you don't want the Arty switch it for a Mech Recovery Unit.

Took me a little time and I had to make a path to a few books. But here is the basic idea, problem is if you follow offical rules vehicle lances have to be the same vehicle. The same goes for infantry companies. I think you should be able to mix a company a little more but you can tweak it if you feel like it. Sorry I did not pull out the model numbers
Mech Lance
OSTOL
Griffin
P Hawk
Grand Dragon
This is s laser / LRM bunch that moves 5/8 and should work well. All of them are heat beasts. P hawk is the recon
Vehicle Lance
4 Maxims
Infantry transport and loads of firepower that is good for fighting soft targers
Infantry company
4 platoons jump SRM
Standard rules make SRM the only way to go. Also the jump helps in rough terrain where hover can not go or you want to surprise the enemy and move them empty while the infantry sneaks in
And the true firepower
2 Transits
4 medium lasers for strafing and an AC 20 to put the fear of the man upstairs into many a mech pilot. Nothing like facing a light manuverable enemy with range knowing they are backed up with big guns just looking for a free shot. Also good to light dropship hunting.
OK that was quick but it could be fun.

Well my internet went down last week due to a bad cable line, so I missed the last few suggestions (I wish I had seen AWADs), and I had to have unit ready for yesterday.
This is what I came up with:

First Mission was a chase mission. Me and another unit were chasing a supply convoy with a mobile HQ lance, gaurded by a lane of Goblins, 2 Myrmidon Medium Tanks, 2 Warrior H-7 Attack Helos, 1 Wolverine, 1 P-Hawk, 1 Enforcer and a Dervish.
The other unit with me had 2 battlemasters (Modified) 6 Wolverines (modified) and 3 Stingers.
Terrain was relatively flat with a few hills and lots of trees along the sides of the road.
We sent our lights and helos up the Eastern edge of the map, trying to get up and out in front of the convoy to set up a "roadblock."
Our Big guns went up the middle nad 3 of the Wolverines went up the wetern side.
Every map the convoy moved up the road more enemy units attivated from their base where they were headed too at the far edge of the map. THey had a bunch of hidden units and pop up turrets. Other units the brought up and out included 1 Wolverine, 1 Griffin, another light end medium (forget what it was), 2 archers, 2 riflemen 1 panther, 1 atlas, 1 quickdraw and a yellow jacket. They also had 1 Stuka available with 20 10 point HE bombs. He dropped them on one of the flanking Wolverines, and was effectively shot down and forced to land behind my units off the map and later captured.
Objective:
Capture convoy, by destroying their escorts. If at the end of a turn a convoy had no escorts on the same map area as them, they would stop and surrender.
Results:
Mission a failure, however, we did manage to deny the enemy plenty of its supplies, thanks to some vindictive artillery.
I lost 1 Beagle, and 1 of my stingers lost its RT, to a lucky back shotform the Enforcer, but recovered its arm. 1 Beagle had its Turret frozen forward, and 1 Zephyr was immobilized from a golden BB that hit the Motive System. The rest of my units took some minor armor damage, two helos (1 of each) took rotor hits. We shot down and recovered 1 stuka, 2 goblin infantry Support Vehicles (3050 variants) captured, 2 destroyed, and 2 Myrmidon Medium Tanks. We severely mauled nmost of the original mechs escorting the convoy. But due to the overwhelming support that popped up we could not isolate the convoy itself.

The Wolvies are 5/8/5 1 LPL,3MPL,1SRM6
BLRS are 4/6 1 Gauss,4 Med LAs,2 pulse,1 srm6
It was a rough fight and I am currently trying to fix the problem with the GM in our game.
