FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ADV FILMS ANNOUNCES LIVE-ACTION THEATRICAL VERSION OF JAPANESE ANIMATED TITLE “NEON GENESIS EVANGELION;” VISUAL EFFECTS BY “LORD OF THE RINGS” STUDIO WETA WORKSHOP LTD.

THE MOST INFLUENTIAL JAPANESE ANIMATED SERIES IN MODERN TIMES TO COME TO LIFE AS A FEATURE FILM

CANNES, FRANCE, 19 May 2003—In an announcement sure to make waves in the entertainment industry, ADV Films President and CEO John Ledford today publicly confirmed industry rumors that the firm has acquired the rights to produce, and has already begun development of, a live-action feature-film based on the Japanese animated television series “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” a multi-million dollar worldwide franchise and perhaps the most influential anime title in the history of the art form. The project is a collaboration between ADV Films, Gainax and Weta Workshop, Ltd.

The Participants
ADV Films is the leading producer-distributor of Japanese animation in North America. The Japanese anime and game studio Gainax Network Systems was one of the original production studios responsible for “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” and Weta Workshop, Ltd. is the New Zealand-based special effects studio that created the effects for Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

“The three main players here represent something of a ‘dream-team’ for a project like this one,” said Ledford. “Between the quality and significance of the Gainax title, Weta’s industry-leading skill in the creation of special visual effects, and our expertise in the marketing and promotion of anime and anime-related content, this project is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

The Story
“Neon Genesis Evangelion” is the story of a reluctant young hero, called upon to pilot an immense robotic weapon in battle against alien invaders. Including both a 26-episode television series and at least two animated motion pictures, “Neon Genesis Evangelion” has long been both a fan favorite and an extraordinary critical and commercial success, with the worldwide franchise producing many millions of dollars in revenue.

Timetable
The “Neon Genesis Evangelion” live-action motion picture is in the earliest stages of development. Ledford confirmed, however, that the timetable is an aggressive one, and that more information on the project is forthcoming.

About Weta Workshop, Ltd
Founded in 1987 by Richard Taylor, Tania Rodger, Peter Jackson and Jamie Selkirk, Weta is a physical and digital effects company providing creatures, special make-up effects, prosthetics, miniatures, armor, weaponry and digital effects for the film and television industry. Over the past sixteen years the company has provided effects for Jackson’s “Meet the Feebles”, “Braindead” (aka “Dead Alive”), “Heavenly Creatures,” “The Frighteners,” and “The Lord of the Rings” movie trilogy, as well as for advertisements and television shows including the popular “Hercules” and “Xena” series. At the height of production on “The Lord of the Rings,” Weta Workshop employed 150 physical effects technicians and 350 digital effects technicians at Weta Digital. Weta’s work on “The Lord of the Rings” has garnered worldwide praise including two Academy Awards in 2002 (for Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup), and one in 2003 (for Best Visual Effects). The British Academy has also honored Weta’s work by awarding two BAFTAs in 2002 (for Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup) and two more in 2003 (for Best Visual Effects and Best Costume).

About Gainax
Gainax was founded in 1984. It began as a corps of amateur filmmakers, centered around current company president Hiroyuki Yamaga and anime director Hideaki Anno. Their first work, “Wings of Honneamise,” continues to garner praise worldwide. Gainax’s highly original style of filmmaking spans the generations, appealing to fans both young and old. 1995’s “Neon Genesis Evangelion” whipped up an anime fever of extraordinary proportions, receiving attention not only from anime fans, but also from many other corners of society. Hideaki Anno, who directed “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” commands respect from even the likes of “Spirited Away” director Hayao Miyazaki.

About ADV Films:
In 1992, ADV Films began to forge the international market for Japanese animation (“anime”) by combining unique titles, outstanding production values and efficient large-scale distribution. Today, ADV Films is the #1 producer-distributor of Japanese animation to the North American market, with the firm’s holdings including such premier titles as “NOIR,” “Sailor Moon,” “Samurai X,” “Hello Kitty’s Paradise,” “RahXephon,” “Spriggan,” “Robotech,” “Full Metal Panic” and “Neon Genesis Evangelion.” In addition, ADV Films’ product line has expanded to include other forms of genre programming, including live-action science fiction programs “Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda,” “Mutant X” and The Jim Henson Company’s “Farscape,” and classic science fiction such as the updated “Gamera” trilogy. ADV Films’ parent company, A.D. Vision, Inc., also publishes Newtype USA, the premier anime and manga monthly in the English-speaking world, and operates The Anime Network™, broadcasting anime and anime-related programming via digital cable, 24 hours a day. the problem I'm seeing with this is more in mechanics....Japanese mecha just move so damned fast than anything American, also with more plot deveolpment. Although the ID4 crew may be able to pull off mech's, I have my doubts about an Eva, but I'm jaded because I don't know a thing about ADV...and IMO, without and plot deveolpment besides just stealing the already-existing storyline (which will probaly be butchered) it may sink....

i asked at AX03 about what the story plot is.

the unoffical, offical responce was this:

the story will be a summary and compression of the existing evangelion plot, kinda like a recap of sorts.

note- not a quote

main directing seems to be in Hideki Ano's hands. creator, producer, and director of neon gensis evangelion.

so, its shaping into a possible success. its not like we can yell at ano that its not right if its his universe, ya know. lol.

more as i find [or remember it]

I'm not the biggest fan of EVA but I'll atleast rent it, and as long as it's in the hands of the creator of the original series then it SHOULD be acceptable as part of the universe.

I agree with Slythis. I watched them and found them interesting but, not enough to make me watch it in the theater and with the long trend of poor sci fi movies as of late(starwars if great but the new ones are just OK. and I cant really think of anyothers that have come out that have been worthwhile) I can see this being a huge flop. Now in know way do I hope that I really hope they do a good job on it, but Ill belileve it when I see it.

Has there been anymore wood on the Battletech movie in the works?

Which is one of the best shows currently out there...

Still, I have reservations about live action Evangelion...still, it depends on who they get to play Rei, Asuka and Misato...

I agree that andromeda is good, but as far as sci fi tv shows go they get much better reception than movies do. Look at most of the major sci fi movies that have come out recentely. with the exception of Star Wars and mabey one or 2 others they are generally ill recieved and have smaller budgets than dramas, love stories, action, and even fantasy (as far as fantasy goes take a long look back at all fantasy movies comming out before LoTR movies and you well see a bunch of movies that are poorly written, underfunded, and really considerede B grade movies, LoTR Broke that mold) Now I'm not saying that ADV wont do a good job but I am honestely not going to hold my breath as far as the movie goes. Its much the same with the Mechwarrior move that is supposedly in the works. I just would rather see them make a Mini series or a regular sitcom type show that is a hour long and runs everyweek and tell a good story. Not condense it down into a story that make no sence and the only people that really understand it are the ones that have read the books.

Actually, I would say that Conan the Barbarian was one of the best movies ever made, with one of the best soundtracks ever...

Why, Why, WHY?

Ok, I am, or should say WAS a huge anime fan, and I have to say...

I hate Evangelion.

With a passion...

The only thing worse than EVA is Blue Gender.

Boring plot, and to my eyes piss poor animation. Mein Gott Fooly Cooly is better animated! But then, I also hate Five Star Stories and Iczer... I think I just hate these bendy wendy razor thin excuses for mecha. Why they feel compelled to turn 'mechs into rubber and build them in all these goofy unrealistic shapes... One of the reasons I got into sci-fi anime was the realism. If it's a full blown comedy I can forgive it, but those goofy EVA's are ridiculous top-heavy spider thin eyesores.

Truthfully, sight few of the giant robot animes made in the past ten years have any appeal for me. To me the last GOOD titles were Madox 01/AD Police/Old BGC (I HATE THE NEW BGC as well. God forbid you should include the original writer and character designer in creating a sequel!). I mean, Gundam's been garbage since War in a Pocket hit, (ok, that shows you how far back I've been in the anime scene), Macross went to the dogs with Macross II (animation good, story ok, Mech designs WTF!), and the giant robot stuff seems to have taken a nose-dive since. I mostly blame Five Star Borings for crap like Evangelion. You want to talk about ridiculous art faerie mecha, there's your winner. The designs have gotten so complicated you reach the point where they just draw one frame and pan across it like it was a cheap hentai flick, with the results being akin to Blue Gender.

Blue Gender... I'd rather rewatch the six episodes of FLCL... Hell, I'd rather watch Inu-Yasha (which I also dislike) than snooze through an episode of Blue Gender. Maybe if the artists got off their asses and drew more than fifteen frames per episode I'd get interested. Using heavy gear style mobility not because it looks cool but because your too lazy to actually animate something walking is not a way to create a series. As for plot, I don't consider any story worth watching where for five minutes they show pans across stills with some dorky voiceover saying... "We're through the first firewall" (10 second pause) "We're through the second firewall" (10 second pause) "We're through the third..." You get the idea.

It's bad when the so called 'serious dramatic' robot shows make Mazinkaiser look good. (looks at model of the Boss robot on the shelf... uhm)

I feel like taking these bozo's currently churning out this schlock and sitting them down to watch Porco Rosso, then telling them to 'try again when they can do THAT'.

Especially since some of these shows, like Gundam, have gone from serious fiction to big toy commercials. One of the reasons I liked anime to begin with was the LACK of that feel. Sure there were tie ins, but I really have to wonder when Gundam Wing has the same character depth as 'The Mighty Orbots'.

Hmm. Blue Seed, Blue Gender, Has anyone else noticed that anime with blue in the title tend to be boring as sin. Oh, wait. Secret of Blue Water... Never mind.

I'd love to see Sunrise take the BeBop team and do a giant Robot flick. I'd be so there.
