OVERVIEW

The Helios, a joint project between the St. Ives Compact and the Com Guards, is generally acknowledged as being one of the poorest-designed 60-tonners in existence, second only (perhaps) to the CHP-1N Champion. With weak armour for its class, and not carrying enough ammunition to last it through even the shortest of battles, the Helios was reviled by the few warriors (un)lucky enough to be assigned one. With the re-absorption of the St. Ives Compact into the Capellan Confederation, the supply of Helios 'Mechs to the Com Guards has been much reduced of late. Most Helioses are being sent to the rebuilding Victoria Commonality Rangers and St. Ives Compact Armed Services. However, Chancellor Liao still allows a handful of Helioses to be sent to the Com Guards from each production run.

Little does he know that the Helios fielded by the Com Guards is substantially different to the standard production models the Guards are being shipped.

CAPABILITIES

The Helios undergoes a massive refit as soon as it arrives at the Com Guards supply depot. The Gauss Rifle is removed, freeing up a considerable amount of tonnage. This tonnage is largely devoted to armour for the 'Mech. The ER Medium Lasers are swapped to the 'Mech’s Right Arm, and a Kinslaughter ER PPC takes up residence in the Helios’ Left Arm. The SRM-6s of the original are replaced with ultra-efficient Streak SRM-4s, and the now-standard C3i Computer is placed in the Helios’ centre torso. The Crosby Manufacturing Firm then replaces the Helios’ old musculature with Triple-Strength Myomers.

Four extra Double Heat Sinks mounted in the Helios’ torsos allow the 'Mech to control the vast amounts of waste heat his 'Mech can generate, but firing all of the weapons the Helios mounts whilst running provides precisely the amount of thermal energy needed to activate the Triple Strength Myomers.

DEPLOYMENT

The Com Guards are sparingly deploying the HEL-C3i Helios amongst its elite units, concentrating them amongst units stationed along the boarder with the Clans. The 12th Army, stationed in the FRR, is home to over 75% of the Com Guard’s Helioses.

MY BLURB

Named for an ancient Sun-god, the Helios did very little to live up to its name (it wasn’t exactly a ‘Nova-Hot’ design). Not that this one’s terribly much better. It took a large amount of tinkering to build this thing; at first I took out the Gauss, gave it an ER Large Laser, and beefed up the armour. That just didn’t seem right. So I went back to The Drawing Board (literally, it’s a great program) and tried again. That time I came away with an ER Large laser, Streak SRM-6 wielding monster that shut itself down on a regular basis. So I tried again. This time, I ran through it one step at a time, ending up with a 'Mech that can reach the 9-Heat Threshold for its TSM when using all of its weapons-one of the very few 'Mechs I have ever built that can do so. At first, using TSM did not occur to me; but then I glanced down at the Heat vs Heat Dissipated cells at the bottom of TDB and realised that if I gave it TSM, it would work out perfectly. 

I swapped the ER PPC and ER Medium Laser arms so that if the SRM ammo went up, you would still have the ER PPC. Not much to look forward to, but anyway…

Enjoy.

LOCATIONS

ER PPC (No Lower Arm/Hand Actuators)- Left Arm
2 ER Medium Lasers- Right Arm

COST ANALYSIS

The HEL-C3i Helios is worth 1,528 BV and costs 8,376,000 C-Bills. The upgrade pack costs *EXACTLY* 3 Million C-Bills, but the advantage you get is spare musculature, a spare Gauss Cannon, and a pair of SRM-6s. Considering how many Com Guard 'Mechs use Gausses or SRM-6s, you come out of the deal fairly well.
