OVERVIEW

The Pumonca, an ambitious project begun by the Smoke Jaguars, was first discovered during Operation Serpent. The Jaguars only had a prototypical variant of the 'Mech, but piloted by a renegade Technician, it wreaked a considerable amount of havoc through the lines of the Knights of the Inner Sphere, before Sir Paul Masters himself engaged the machine in his captured Nobori-Nin and bought it down.

The design seems to be a larger version of the popular Puma 'Mech favoured by the Clans, an excellent light 'Mech that packs a serious punch. By almost doubling the 'Mech’s weight, they have increased the amount of Pod Space it can carry and given it a significant amount of armour. Since it carries a larger payload and moves much faster than its closest rival, the Nova, we fear it may eventually become the Clan’s standard-issue Medium-weight OmniMech.

CAPABILITIES

The base chassis comes with full armour for its weight, which is to say that it is leaps and bounds ahead of the Nova in the survivability stakes. A massive 300 XL provides power to the 'Mech, complete with a pair of inbuilt extra Double Heat Sinks. The torso infrastructure has also been heavily reinforced, as some variant configurations employ Jump Jets.

The Pumonca Prime mimics its antecedent by packing ER PPCs with underslung ER Medium Lasers in the arms. They are slaved to a Clan Targeting Computer, and an additional 4 heat sinks are crammed into the chassis to keep heat at a manageable level. This allows the pilot to employ both PPCs on a continuous basis and use at least one of the Medium lasers when they close up.

Alternate Configuration A comes calling with a pair of Artemis-equipped LRM-15s. Each is supplied with a plentiful 24 rounds of ammo, and are admirably supported by a pair of Medium Pulse Lasers and a head-mounted ER Medium laser. The 'Mech retains the Targeting Computer, and will make very short work of an unwary opponent.

Alternate Configuration B is a fearsome meld of the Primary configuration of the Pumonca and the Nova Prime. Equipped with a head-chopping ER PPC and six-pack of ER Medium Lasers, plus enough heat sinks to employ all bar one medium laser continuously, the Pumonca B is a fearsome opponent. However, it does not mount the usual Targeting Computer.

Alternate Configuration C appears to be a jump-capable melding of the Pumas B and C. It carries an ER Large Laser, a Large Pulse Laser, and a pair of ER Medium Lasers. All of its weapons are tied into a targeting computer, and the 'Mech is capable of pouncing 180 metres onto an unsuspecting foe thanks to the six Jump Jets mounted in the Pumonca’s torsos.

The final stock variant appears to have been created by a Fusionaire-addled Tech on a night off. It carries a pair of Heavy Large and Medium Lasers, slaved to a targeting Computer. It mounts 6 Jump Jets, and-despite the 6 Double heat Sinks added to the frame-cannot dissipate heat quickly enough, forcing the pilot into an either/or mentality during fights. If it remains stationary, however, it is capable of using a Heavy Large Laser and both Mediums, causing significant amounts of damage.

MY BLURB

The design brief I gave myself for this was ‘super-Adder’. I think it came off reasonably well. I kept the speed, but increased armour and heat dissipation. This makes an effective counterpoint to the slightly heavier Storm Crow, which (although fast) sometimes has trouble with heat. There is very little difference in armour between the two, as well.

The Pumonca is a lot better than the Nova. I rarely see the Nova outside of its Prime, H, and S configurations, and although I haven’t made any Pumoncas that match those specs, there is more than enough room on the chassis and available pod space to do so. It is even capable of jumping 1 hex further.

The name is stolen from White Wolf’s ‘WereWolf: The Apocalypse’. The name is given to Bastet (Great Cat shapechangers) who can turn into Cougars. The Pumonca of the World of Darkness are fast, tough, and pack a mean punch. I think this 'Mech does as well.

The Pumonca is something of a pet project of mine, cooked up a little over two years ago. It began its life as an offshoot of my Sabre Wolf project, but I quickly realised I might well be onto something with my speedy little 'Mech.

Enjoy.
