The Leopard is one of the four standard Battlemechs that are used by the Winchester Federation's Armed Forces. They have long replaced the original Star League-era 'Mechs that they were originally fielded by the WFAF. It took the Federation nearly three hundred year to make the decision to replace their older Battlemechs. The old 'Mechs, such as the Warhammer, Rifleman, Commando and Phoenix Hawk are now in storage were they are maintained in case they are needed in a future crisis.

The Leopard and her sisters, the Jaguar, Red Lion and White Tiger, have been in service now for over 170 years and there are no plans for replacing them. The main role for Battlemechs in WFAF is to support the Armored [BA] and Light Infantry Regiments that pervade the Brigades. The Leopard is the lightest of the four machines and is quite mobile and is used primarily as a reconnaissance vehicle, though it is used as a flanker and raider as well.

The four 'Mechs were developed along with General Purpose Missile [GPM] system and the lightweight fusion engine. The GPM was designed to replace both the SRM and LRM in the WFAF weapons arsenal. The GPM combines a state of the targeting system with a powerful long-range rocket that packs the punch of the short range missile. The new missile is heavier than either missile that it replaces, main due to all the improvements. The high explosive warhead and guidance package combined with the missiles motor bring the weight of each missile to 18.5 kg, nearly double the old short-range missile and more than double the weight of the old long-range missile.
