The thing I liked about Btech was that in the original story mechs were valuable assetts in and of themselves. Families handed them down from one generation to the next. The fear of begin dispossesed always lurked in the background for the mechwarrior families. Much like the knights of medieval Europe.
Light mechs were supposed to be relatively plentiful, medium mechs were the workhorses, heavies scarce and assault mechs were seldom seen, but things to be feared when the did show.
Anybody remember saying, "Oh shit, they've got an Awesome!" and meaning it?
I recall setting up a scenario where light lances were fighting it out because the salvageable carcass of a Stalker was at stake.
After the Gray Death library was found and the latest succession war was fought it seems that every house started cranking out battlemechs.
Currently there are 297 heavy mech designs or variants. 297!!! Even worse, there are 250 assault mechs or variants. What the hell happened to limited production facilities? Did the noble houses pull mech factories out of their asses?
Opinions?

There is close to like 408 mechs without counting variants or alternate configs for the omnis...
Some where along the way the tech boom pushed the storyline idea of disppossed as being really bad to something of an incoviences...
And as for the mech factories, just add water to one mech and you get a new factory...complete with lostech items and SKILLED workers all there to run it for you.

"Did the noble houses pull mech factories out of their asses?"
They pulled out more than factories. They went from lvl 1 tech to tech that equals the clans in just 10 years (3050-3060). It took the clans how long to get this far?

Hardware you have to realize that the btech universe is just a game put out by a company. and the only way to keep that company going was to pump out newer and better(lol)mechs. Also take in consideration that as these new mechs came out, these Factories where shutting down the old lines to retool them for the newer mechs, and of course their are new corperations out there as well.
As far as the IS pumping out newer tech, hell they capture the prototypes and reverse engineer it and whalla everybody has clan PPC's. it was only a matter of time _________________ Click- tech is for sissies

Dear Hardware........ We must have been kin seperated at birth. I can give a couple of factors that may have lead to a surge but a renianssance of Mech Warfare, Hardly.
1) Comstar did not have as tight grip on the technology as we thought they did. Or maybe some other faction was trying to release the technology to help them cleanse the sickness eating up Comstar.
2) NAIS and the likes have a much bigger impact then we think. Look even in modern times how a single place can lead to a bunch of innovations.
3) War leads to major innovations. Getting slaughtered leads to desperation. So the Clanners would have booting things in the ass ASAP, but the mega facilites would not have exisited.
4) Cool stuff found in the deep Pheriphery that never gets mentioned in the books. What would happen if someone stumbled across on of the Dragoons backup caches.
All in all not great but plausable for a surge. A great example of the insane growth..... Cappella after the 4th Succession War. Just add water and Presto instant military industrial complex.
AWAD- I can not even name any mechs from 3060

I recal Ardan Sortek kind of saying that in the novel "Sword and the Dagger". And he was even piloting a Victor at the time. HA!
Then again, way back when, the first time you threw 2 Archers against our rookie ShadHawk and Griff pilots, I think I said the same thing " oh s***!"
I agree that the Btech universe was way cooler as a era of technological decay (3025). "Life is cheap, 'Mech are not", just doesn't have the same ring to it in 3067.
