Topics related to ways of finding illegal materials for download should not be discussed on this site. I'm all for open discussions, but I don't encourage the pirating of Battletech materials, even if some are out of print.

Material that is no longer available through market should be put online for download as neither Wizkids nor Fanpro will loose any profit for the material they no longer print. They, who own bought the rights for BT from FASA, should make the effort to do it themeselves in order to combat that piracy you mention. Otherwise the only way to get a hand on those publishings is through people who sell it used and that is sometimes a pain in the neck to find stuff you want.

The folks over at CBT have made many of the books available for download. From what I understand there will be more added at some time.

Almost every sourcebook can be found on eBay.

We've already had the "copyright" discussion here many times, and just like many other boards Mordel has decided that discussions on the issue of illegal downloads shouldn't be allowed.

I appologize, for I have not seen the posts regarding the illegal download discussions. Just so I am not misunderstood: am not in favor of illegal downloads, my position is that if a material is "out of print", it should be posted to legally download.
I surf Ebay and Amazon for used BT material myself. but there has been one or two occassions where I was looking for a specific and did not find an acceptable buy. I am not going to pay for something either that is not in "good" condition.

The other thing about out of print material is that the only person making any profit off the sale of used materials is the individual who has the material in question. The ethical difficulties of bypassing the original creators of the material do not exist when simply bypassing second-hand dealers in cases where the material is obviously out of print for good. I certainly do not see any ethical difficulties with bypassing them. Sure, as the copyright has not expired it is still technically illegal, but this simply highlights one of the many points at which ethics and the law are out of alignment. Still, I really cannot blame the moderators for covering their asses on this one. Posters here should do so as well; remember that in the U.S. at least the government is actively trying to clamp down on file sharing. I do not think this site is too high on their radar screen, but all it would take is one lucky investigator.

Here is the URL for the Inner Sphere cartographical society though; there is nothing illegal or unethical about viewing or downloading their maps. It is also a lot easier to get them directly from the web-site; they have quite an extensive collection, with maps covering most periods of the Inner Sphere's history. They also went to the trouble of plotting all possible jump-ship routes.

"technically illegal" is like "a little bit pregnant".

Illegal is illegal.

Doesn't matter...if you're driving 50mph in a 30mph zone you're still speeding even if you don't get caught.

The questions that seem to be posted here is 'Is it legal?' and 'Which ones are safe to DL?' Some sites create things purely for download. For example, I found a nice map of the Inner Sphere, circa 2750-2757. It was a nice map, very well done, and was posted for anyone to copy. Ive also found tech that people have made and actively distributed on the net. The LRM -30 launcher was a very nice weapon, thank you very much, though the AC -40 was too big and clunky to use.
If the data is posted on someones website, then I belive that it then 'public domain'. You may download it, or not, at your discresion. The forum on this site where people post their own designs I would consider public domain. If someone doesnt want the mech or vehicle copied, then they should put the caveat on with the design, or just plain not post it.
What about the older stuff? I think that this is also safe to DL. The product is not on the general market, thus if it is pirated, no money is being lost. As an example. I had an '87 Chevy Nova that was in constant need of parts. I was a little rough on the thing, Ill admit. The time came that the carb needed to be replaced. My only option was to go to the local junkyard and get a salvageable carb from one of the wrecks there. The replacement carb had the serial number stamped on it, wherein was cointained the make, model, and year of car that this carb was made for. In a way, it was 'copyrighted' by the manufacturer. But the car was old enough that no parts were made by the manufacturer, and there were no second-party parts available (AC Delco, Napa, Jockos, etc.). If im looking for a book that is out of print, that none of the gameshops can find or track down, is it wrong then to check eBay or a p2p service? If the above example is a little fuzzy, I apologize. The nyQuil has my head stuffed full of cotton. Either that or the head cold it up to its tricks again.....
If youve looked all over for a book, and have had no luck whatsoever, i think that you would then be allowd to check online to either purchace or copy the materiel.

You are going to have to be more aggressive than that if you want people to listen to you around here

Its not that I dont want to be agressive, I just dont want to piss off anybody. This strikes me as one of those opinions that could raise welts. Ive learned to tread very lightly in these areas. Hey, Im married, I know not to be -too- vocal in my ideas.
In any event, Its just an opinion. Put whatever value in it you wish.

Just because a product is no longer available does not give you the right to deseminate the product because "no one is losing money". The courts have consistantly upheld this.

The short version, if you don't own the rights to something you don't have any right to give it to or sell it to someone else.

Period. End of discussion.

I laugh at people that think the law is otherwise. The law is crystal clear here in the United States. I defy anyone to show any official government website or publication that says otherwise.

Just to clarify here. It's perfectly legal to take a book and resell it after you've already purchased it or obtained it somehow. But you're not allowed to make copies of it and sell it.

Or to let someone else look at it. What if you let a friend borrow the BMRr and that friend memorized the rules. Finally, this friend without having the BMRr any longer goes and types up the jist of rules and posts them for others to look at and/or copy, would that be copyright infringement?
