Right, picture this, actually happened to me
A nice campaign, first mission attacking a small defensive outpost. I spent half of my original credits on a nice new Daishi Renegade. Which should last me through the campaign. Out it steps onto the battle field in its nice warpaint. One shot, takes down a jenner. Then it turns round (on its second turn now) and takes a myrmidon ppc round in the head! Pilot just survives and remains consious! Then another damn myrmidon puts another shot through the head! Kills pilot, downs Daishi, the other mechs in the lance didnt have the firepower to finish the mission, so i had to withdraw. So the opponent salvages my Daishi! Typical!

That is always a problem if you spend too much on one mech..
I've always believed in keeping the numbers pretty close if possible. That way you don't get into the problem you just illustrated.

That is another reason I like to use numbers of lights If I am going on a BV based game I will field numbers of light fast units.

and thats why I focus on medium to heavy mechs. move fast enough for my tactics and have ample firpower.

Yep, mediums should always make up the bulk of your forces. Lights next, then a few heavies for the serious bruising. Assaults are only used for, well, assaults.

Now wouldn't you have liked to be on the other side of that? Winning the mech instead of buying it?

Yep! Much more fun, still. I dont usually bother with the assault class, i tend to go for faster heavies and mediums.
