I was mentioning on a thread a while back that the average Mech company was made on 25 million C-bills.
This is a booboo on my part, showing it's been a while since I eyeballed my Battletech stuff.
The actual value of a company should be *50* million C-bills, and teh same for a Clan star of mechs.
This is about 4 million per mech, which is about the same as getting a company of Shadow Hawks. (The S. Hawk is pretty much teh average machine or Generic Mech, and is 4.5 million, so, 54 million technically, BUT).
Mea culpa on this to whomever's head I hurt.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled discussions.

You could still do it for 25 Million... It would just be a little smaller....

Of course both numbers are impossible when you add XL engines and such to the equation

If I remember correctly some of the assaults I played with in those design programs cost $25 mil all by themselves. That is why I stopped trying to play the whole mercenary group thing. Too much math. I have trouble keeping my own checkbook balanced, let alone my character's.

We generally use lease programs for our mechs. Some we own outright but others (generally the heavy and assults) we lease (we are acrewed if we lose it because we then have to buy a mech that no longer worksor in some cases exsists). So 25 to even 40 Million isnt that bad. And if you lease them you can get a better over all unit make up.
We generally did a value of 10 percent of the units value for the lease contract. With an option to buy or return. There was also a a heafty security deposit initally placed at the beginning of the lease contract. (again like 25%) That is how my merc unit is set up at the moment. Over half are currentely leased. It is really the only way that most of the new mechs can end up in the hands of a merc company.
My units make up is as follows
4 lances of mechs and 3 lances of Conventinal vehicles.
4 lances of mechs and vehicles are leased.
3 lances are owned or being paid off.
We also figure that there are Mech Junkyards, where you can find mechs in lesser repair and therefor at a lower price. (obviously you WONT find certin mechs there. anything over tech base 3050 wont be there.) And even then you wont find XL's and most ER stuff there. And ABSOLUTELY NO CLAN GEAR AT ALL.
Along with Junkyards we also feel there are used Mech lots. When you upgrade a lance members Mech it has to go somewhere so you trade it in to get a slight discount on the new mech. So they need to turn around and sell the old mech. Again at a slightly reduiced cost. Mabey 10 to 25% off depending on the Mech.
Contracts with a factory to test Prototype mechs and vehicles are RARE (and kind of far fetched) but can work. And make for someinteresting gameplay.
But that is what we do for our games and that is how I built my merch unit. Looking for deals, trades, leases and contracts.

(And also to Raven, but it was mentioned a bit already)
Yes, working with the 50 million cap isn't easy, this is true. When you start using all NewTech, with Endo-XL-DHS mechs with ER stuff all over, you're getting mechs that cost in teh range of Clanners. A 25 million Assault Mech gets the classic problem ... so effective, but you can't afford to lose it, so it only comes out for the most important battles.
You have to learn which mechs are worth the money and which ones aren't. How easy can you get spare parts for the repairs? The Vindicator, for example, is clearly outmatched by Raijin, but the Raijin is a Comstar mech, which means HARD to get access to, and teh hoops you have to jump through for replacement parts are going to be pretty huge. The Vindicator, meanwhile, is one of the most produced mechs, ever, and has the might of Ceres Metals behind it. Ceres'll sell a Vindicator arm to *anybody*. They're all about the profit. Not like any other house *wants* the Vindicator.
Balancing the finances isnt easy, but, it's one of the big things about the role-playing side of things... quite a few militaries were never beaten on the battlefield, but lost due to supply issues and were forced to give up. See also: Rommel the Desert Fox. Learning when a mech can be saved and when it has to be stripped for parts is a sad thing for a tech, but needed.
This is why damaged mechs quit the field, usually launching flares, smoke, or just broadcasting a 'Retire' signal while torso-twisting to the rear (Akin to modern tanks turning the turret to the rear) to show non-hostility. In 3025, actually *destroying* a mech was rare, as anyone with a lick of sense signalled defeat and left, rather than let his ride be shot out from under him. It took a LOT of pay for a warrior to say, "Okay, we hold the line, no matter what." This is what made the dispossessed so needy and so pitied by other mechwarriors. Here were people who gambled that, with just one more shot, one more minute, they could force the other side to break and retreat, to win the mission, to do what they should do, but one hit came in that they didn't expect or see, and their Mech died.
It's just crushing, because every Mechwarrior knows that one day, one second, one shot, and she could be out there as well, having once known what it was to stride the land like a king, and then to be a pauper.
Some of the pilotkillers even started out this way, thinking that to terminate a pilot was more humane than letting them live with that memory. Some of your worst savages that would, for example, step on the cockpit of a fallen mech, were, in their own sick way, thus being merciful.
There's a true comraderie between pilots that goes beyond house affiliation or other factors, with a universal fear of fire being probably the most basic. It's one thing to put a mech down, but quite another to know that the pilot's trapped inside and watch a fire break out. Older combatants tend to stop and rush to aid teh fallen in that situation, having seen, or known, pilots who burned up. There's no worse way to go, and they all fear it.
In closing, recall that being an ace (five kills) was never supposed to be easy, and double-aces (ten kills) were REALLY rare. The Black Widow only had about thirty, if memory serves, until teh Clan stuff started up, and she was one of the best of teh best.
... wow. This post really drifted, didn't it?

Boring but cheap and effective. You should try to limit the number of different units anyway, just to make supply easier. My style of play would fare really well with a full company of modified Wolverines.

Modified Wolverines, remember. I have one posted here, somewhere. A mix of the newtech Marik and Kurita versions, sporting DHS, an ER Large Laser, two MLs and two SRM-6 launchers. Deadly and not too dear compared to the XL engine versions.

Total Cost: 5 406 606 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1 216
Search the Design Forum for Wolverine WVR-6RU and you should find it. I'm rather proud of it.
