O.K. on one side we have an Archer and a Jenner, on the other an Orion and a Valkyrie. The map is rolling hills, light woods, and lakes.

(I ran this battle last night, I just want to see how many people get it right).

I think it would have to go the the Archer and Jenner. The valkarie is going to get trashed by the Jenner, its just to slow compared to it. It also dosent have the close in fire power.

The Archer / Jenner should have won. The others don't have movement or the range for the terrain.

I concur, Archer/Jenner wins, unless the other team has much better pilots....

I think the Orion will beat the Archer and the Jenner will beat the Valkyrie, so it depends overall on which in those matchups come out in better shape..

Just for sake of arguement though I'll take the Orion.

My lance in college always had a jenner and an Archer. SO out of previous experience I will have to pick them. Once the Jenner makes easy work of the Valkerie, then the Orion would be toast. LRMS from across the field and SRMs right in the face. Lethal combo.

This is actually exactly what happened. I tore the Valkyrie to shreads with the Jenner; my opponent was smart enough to keep the Valkyrie aimed at the Archer the whole time though, and had the Orion guard the Valkyrie's back, so it was only a matter of time before the Jenner took a few hits. In the end the Archer was pretty badly beat up, but lost to a head shot. The Valkyrie was only one point of center torso internal damage from going down entirely when the archer died, but I had the Jenner retreat at that point.

Yeah me!

Like I said.. Whichever mech comes out of the initial battle better will dictate the scenario.. In your fight, sounds like the Orion came out relatively clean and the Jenner slightly damaged?

Actually in either case it sounds like it should have been a fun fight.

I think the archer/jenner combo would win.
If I were commanding them I would keep the jenner back with the archer as close support and them I'd pummel the orion with LRM's, when the orion tried to close I would rush the jenner to him and it's close in fire plus the archer's long range will pummel the orion into slag. Unless the valkyrie was becoming a pest I would at first ignore him except maybe a salvo or two of LRM's if he got into optimum range first.
As for the Orion/valkyrie side I would try to seperate the archer/jenner from each other and then concentrate fire to remove them one by one, I'd use long range fire to take down the Jenner and then close fast to take down the archer.

That's what I love about this; the armchair strategies

I love reading these LRM strategies..

Inner sphere LRMs are not good weapons. Clans are significantly better as the short range isn't screwed with.

Any strategy about pummeling someone at long ranges with LRMs either isn't working with a 4/5 pilot/gunner, or is playing a VERY dumb opponent.

For example.. Mo? in our Inner sphere/Clan Battle you have 3 LRMs.. do you think you will get a shot to actually hit me at long range with them?

Base to hit = 8
My movement will at least be +2
He will either walk or run so we say walk +1

that gives him an 11 without any sort of cover..

He might get a hit in, but in no way shape or form could he pummem me at range.

I like having the LRMs in small amounts, like the Thunderbolt or the Orion (both carry an LRM-15), or in large battles (an archer makes a great barrage vehicle in a large unit), but in duels the LRMs just do not really compete well. You are right about minimum range, that restricted the Archer's movement and shots a good deal. I wish the archer's lasers all pointed forward; that would have given it some pretty heavy firepower in close. Limited ammo is also a major problem. Most of those LRM 20 shots will miss. THey did tear the Valkyrie up real good when they hit, but overall I did more damage with the Jenner.

Pin If I had inner sphere I would not use LRMs for the reasons you stated the Clan LRM has a short range out to 7 hexes with no mimimum very usefull.and I still have the long reach if needed

they are a lot lighter too. I love those heavies with three or four LRM-20s.

Yeah Clan LRMs aren't bad at all.. I just really dislike inner sphere LRMs, unless you can carry alternate loads in the ammo bin, they are very difficult to use well..

Even thenm due to the way some folks used the alternate loads, FASA changed alot of the rules way back when to make them less useful.
