I just finished running a scenario in a vacuum. I learned a few things you all might find useful:
Each time a 'mech is hit in a vacuum, the defender must roll under 10+;if a 10, 11, or 12 is rolled here, the location struck is breeched, regardless of any armor remaining, and all critical components in that section are rendered useless. By the end of the fight, over half of the 'mechs had been disabled, all through atmospheric breeches they would have survived in atmospheric combat, and all of the 'mechs left standing had lost hull integrity in at least one location. Tactically, this has the following effects:
1) Unless you are a glutton for punishment, do not take XL engines into a vacuum environment. You can bet at least one of your torsos will be penetrated at some point during the fight.
2) SRMs and LRMs are kings of the battlefield in a vacuum. Missiles allow for multiple hits, giving your more chances to knock out locations
3) Use 'mechs with lots of small, short-range weapons weapons; this also increases the number of actual hits on armor

What about underwater combat? From what my friend told me, you could use, say a Hunchback IIC, to punch a hole in the targets armor, then shove the target into the water and force him to roll to see if the hull gave way.
Or at least he conned some kid into giving up by doing that to him.

Cluster rounds from LB-X AC's would also be great there. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

If there's even 1 point of armor in a section then it will not flood when entering water...you only roll for breech when you are damaged under water. Of course if a section doesn't have any armor then it floods.
That's one of the hazards of my Mosh Pit event.

OK, now everybody be honest...
How many of you thought about Hoovers, Eurekas and Dirt Devils when you first read the title of this thread?
Seriously though. Taking mechs into a vacuum is risky at best. I do like the idea of peppering the opponent with SRMs and LRMs and hoping for those lucky crits. Some of the Solaris mechs with dozens of MGs would be good for that hull breech seeking.

Funny you mention the M.G.s...both a Phoenix Hawk and a Thunderbolt got hull breeches with machine gun hits.

Casey and I ran a couple games at Total Con a few years ago. One was based on vacuums and low grav worlds (.1G), and the second was a clan invasion of a kurita planet that had extensive defenses set up underwater to protect their mining industry.
They were alot of fun.. and it is always alot of fun watching people try to figure out their tactics. Casey and I used to brainstorm the different tactics on each scenario to see how well they would run, and we always had a ball doing it.

I kinda liked doing a 45 hex charge.
I liked it so much I did it twice.

Now imagine the charge of a mech that can move 11/17 in normal gravity
