I was almost a regular at one point with you guys... lost a fight against Mordel's 2nd line clan mech against my pretty Mad Dog Variant once upon a time.
Any way. TO my question
I'm in the final stages of setting up a world level campaign with supplies and just about every tech 2/3 rule.
Now I go to buy a spare engine of the Fusion 240 class, and lo and behold for my 40 tonners it will cost me 640,000 c-bills and for my 60 tonners it will cost me 960,000 c-bills.
I'm at a loss to explain how the same engine (standard fusion, double heat sinks) can magically cost 1/3rd more when placed in the 60 tonner as opposed to the 40 tonner.
I'm not sure if this counts as a rant or a question. But can I get some opinions?

The same discussion is going on over on the HMPro boards concerning AT2 units. The heavier the mech, the more expensive it is to add components. It has always been this way and don't expect it to ever change.

The higher costs of beer, indented food because of the extra time needed to move everything out of the way. Higher insurance costs (if they still exist...) because of the increased chance of injury from moving so many tons of equipment around...
and of course..
Just because. _________________ "My job is to keep the majority of people in this country alive. That's it. If fifty-one percent eat a meal tomorrow and forty-nine percent don't, I've done my job." - The Beast (AKA The President), Transmetropolitan

Okay, I'll just magically rule that all spare engines are bought for the heaviest unit in the force that can use them...
That so blows my budget though.
lol. I'll live with it. Just gotta work some magic to equip my stupid Drac Regiment.

I think it has to do with the specifics of power equipment. If you buy a spare engine for one type of unit then to use it on another unit with the same engine rating would require a tech to make some skill rolls to modifiy it for use. That's how I always played it in long campaigns. Of course, it always elps if you hire a really good tech staff too. At least if you negotiate for good salvage rights. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

What happens if I strip a 240 engine from a 40 tonner and install it in a 60 ton 'mech...does the universe implode, not being able to maintain the contradiction?
Honestly, this is one of the stupidest things I have ever seen.

I'd have to agree with you on that Mud. I just wish that I'd have less rules to try and figure out now that I'm GMing a 2v1 campaign where the one is a frigging regiment with all the bells and whistles and dropships. and the 2 of us have little more than hopes dreams and a tertiary and a pair of battalions

Especially is that same engine is used in different stock designs of different weights? That must get really confusing for a mech designer and/or factory.

I guess I look at it this way. My truck uses a standard 318 Dodge engine, my dad's old van used the same engine. To move one engine from the truck to the van requires different brackets a different tranny, different air filters, etc. Mechs would be the same way. The basic Fusion engine block will be the same but the parts required to install it will be different. A bigger mech would need a different power converter than a smaller mech. (so on and so forth) That is why I like Seraphs idea of just using the same engine, but having to make tech rolls to install it to the other mech. Just like if you take a ppc from a Panther and install it on your Phoenix Hawk.

All it comes down to Blackhand is this. You are in control of your campaign. If you think it should be different then, as long as your players do not disagree, feel free to alter some rules, ie..making "house" rules, to fit your campaign. If you feel that for your campaign that all engines of a given rating are one price, then BEHOLD!! They are suddenly all the same price. That 240 engine will cost the same in a 20 tonner as it does in an eighty tonner. Just as long as your players do not mind then it's okay. Also be careful that some rule changes do not negatively affect your game's playability and enjoyment. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

One possibility is too keep parts cost the same.
The real reason why buying a new 60 ton mech costs more than a 40 tonner with the same engine is the mark up the companies charge
Buying the spare parts shouldn't be modified by the weight in my opinion. _________________ "My job is to keep the majority of people in this country alive. That's it. Bigger transformers, and bigger conductors, and several other things that go with needing more power for moving a bigger mech. The actuators/myomers probably suck higher currents than on a smaller mech to move the largers mass, the cost is in heavy duty conductor/ circuitry.
