==Overview:==
Possibly one of the most underestimated weapons in use in the Inner
Sphere today is the Hatchet. If used right, a hatchet can bring down some
mechs in a single blow. Despite this, hatchet-bearing mechs are few and far
between, and most of them (at least initially) were intended for close-range
combat.
Johnston Industries, who has already contrubuted the Axeman to the field
of hatchet-bearing mechs, made the decision to experiment with a lighter-end
hatchet-bearing mech that could still engage at longer ranges. And thus the
Cleaver was born.
Although not the lightest hatchet-bearing mech in existance (the Scarabus
beats it by over 10 tons), it still has one advantage that most
hatchet-bearing mechs lack: a serious long-range punch provided by an ER PPC.
The logic behind this is simple: most IS pilots instinctively know that if
confronted by a foe with a PPC, you close in until you get to a point to where
the weapon is innaccurate. If the opposing pilot does get this close, however,
they will find themselves in for a trap - not only does the PPC not have a
minimum range, but they must now contend with a hatchet on a mech that can
easily close to range with most others of its size class and heavier. Helping
it out in this subtrefuge is an ECM system.

You are out of your mind. Hatchets are probably the most overestimated weapons in the Inner Sphere.
I'll be glad to let you get next to me in the 40 ton mech and swing that hatchet while I blast away with all my weapons and kick you.
If you hit with the hatchet you get to roll an 8 point hit on the full body chart with a 1:36 chance to hit the head (and at 8 points you win't even wipe out the head armor on most mechs).
If I hit (and my to-hit is probably 1 less than your's) you have to make a pilot check. And if the to-hit is to high for me to risk needing a pilot check I'll take my 2 punches with a 1:6 chance at the head.
Big thumbs down on this mech and it's MOS.

You're not shooting blanks, that's for sure!
IIRC I've managed to hit something with a hatchet exactly once. People don't close in on the things, because they fear the "mighty" hatchet. So most of the time it's just a mech with fewer guns than it could have, getting shot at more often than it should be.
