Long Toms will always get my vote. Sure even Urbanmechs will out run them but you can get serious damage with them on your side. Especially in campaign settings, because of its 20 Map sheet range.
Still I happen to like them alot if I can keep them advancing fast enough to use them.

I would have to agree with blackhand although i've never used mobile artillery before I think the long tom would be my choice. it has the greatest range out of all the artillery guns you can use. _________________ A wise man speaks because he has something to say. How about Long Toms mounted on Fortress dropships?

The one's mounted on Fortress Class dropships are almost too expensive to use. I dislike getting my dropships in range to use artillery. Since it also means they're in range.
Its a good weapon in my opinion but usually if your sitting around using your Long Tom on a Fortress you'll be forced off by enemy aerospace as well.
Where as given decent support you can risk a lance of the vehicle version of the Long tom.

I think the fortress was designed for use by those who wanted a more secure landing zone. And it is mobile... just not in the usual way.
You probably won't commit to using Fortress class dropships for anything less than a planet grab. It makes little sense for a raid.
One use that came to mind is in the fluff where six of these monster sealed the fate of one of the sword of light regiments.

Hmmm.So everyone agrees on Long Toms....I ususally don't risk a Fortress.I favor Union-X Class DropShips for Base for raids. _________________ War is but a Clash of interests.

The Long Tom is good, but very slow. Arrow IV is a lot better for mech regiments, they can be mounted on mechs and follow everywhere. I've tried using Aerospace fighters too. Just hang some Arrow IV missiles under them.
So IMO Arrow IV is the best mobile artillery.
And check out my mech-mounted Long Tom in the Designs section if you want. It's only a snub-nosed cannon, but still dangerous.

I guess it depends on what you need at the time. If you want lotsa range and lotsa damage, go with the god ol Long Toms.
I like the Arrow IV's on battlemechs, due to their mobilityRange and damage are middle of the road, but the ammo is prety skimpy.
Thumper and Sniper artillery I really havent used, nor have I used them against anyone else, so I really cant log a valid opinion on them.

I put a Long Tom on a hovercraft once. It actually worked out pretty well, since the campaign took place in a desert. _________________ "The enemy's gate is down."

Hmm.I ve mounted an Arrow IV on mechs before.I have to say i prefer Lrm 20s because ammo IS very skimppy on them. But they do good damage. _________________ War is but a Clash of interests.

Ive found that merely HAVING artillery ready to go can be a big psychological weapon.
Case In Point: Last time I played against a favored opponent, I used a Naga artillery omnimech in one of my battle stars. Upon recognizing the mech, he made every effort to both bring the Naga down and avoid any mechs that might be carrying or were known to carry TAG. I didnt hit him once with any artillery (curse-ed dice. 25 seconds in the microwave for them!) but just the threat forced him into a defensive position that he didnt like.
