I dunno. I got into Battletech a long time after LAMs were disbanded, so they don't have any special memory to me. I understand many felt the original LAM rules were broken, so if they brought them back it would have to be with different rules. Personally I don't care if LAMs are never brought back.

I like LAMs, but they were way too powerful in air-mech mode. If they are caught by aerospace fighters though, the game's up for the LAMs...they are inferior fighters. They are tactically invaluable though; sneak a Dropship into orbit, drop a lance of LAMs on your target, and be out before the enemy even knows you are there. _________________ "The enemy's gate is down."

I would like to see them again, but they definitely need a 'tune up' as it were. I recall being hit with charge attacks by a LAM in AirMech mode and being damn near flattened by it, and that was just the LAM Wasp. The Tactical Handbook had some information on what damage (such as Myomers and other vital stuff) would 'freeze' an LAM in what mode. I saw a lot of people abusing that rule to be stuck in AirMech mode and running rampant over the field.
With some tunig, I think that LAMs could make a limited comeback, but it would take alot of work.

I think they should be back and tuned up.
I had played once long time ago(against)
and now I finished to paint a WSP-LAM.
I would like to integrate it in to a game once
but even with the last revised rule(tactical handbook)still I got many doubt.
One is if while in hybrid conf. wich table hits
schould I use?

Aren't LAMs considered VTOLs while in AirMech mode? That would include the "may not charge" rule besides the nice LB-X cluster ammo bonus against them.

Indication of how out of the loop I am...
Didn't know they'd gone.
Never stopped me from using them. I agree, however, that the use is limited. Mostly recon and raiding. I hadn't thought of the dropship trick. I'll need to try that some time. _________________ "Politics is the Art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, misdiagnosing the problem, and applying the wrong solution."

Never really saw the pioint of them, they're kinda limited value for a very expensive toy that breaks relatively easily.
Plus, against real aerofighters they get creamed and against real mechs they get creamed. So rthey're kinda a bad draw.

well, NO.It was a good idea. But it needs a few hundred years of research before the idea comes back. _________________ \"I will not have my ship shot out from under me FIRE!!!\"

Of course they do. If you hit them in the right place, they pop like balloons...

I've only ever used LAMs once or twice. They are kinda über-powerful when used in LAM-mode.
However, I voted yes for one main reason: In the German version of the Kurita house book (the German version had abbreviated versions of all 5 books lumped into one enormous volume) it states fairly clearly that the Stinger-LAM is one of only 3 light 'mechs (together with Panther and Jenner) still in production in Kurita space (Lexatech). Yes, I know that plant was destroyed by the Novacats in order to get rid of LAMs for good, but....
The Stinger-LAM was originally one of Kurita's mainstays. I know this detail has long been lost to time, but still.... (My fast Kuritan strike lance consists of two Jenners and two Stinger-LAMs) _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior

one thing LAMs need to watch out for is pulse and LBX and now they have Anti-Aircraft Targeting comp. put that in a rifleman with LBX or Pulse than LAMs shouldn't be too much of a problem. the pulse and LBX should compensate for the +1 to hit for ground targets. after they are dead.

No. Not even looking at the game rules, I don't like a BT universe with transformers in them. That's entirely subjective.
If they do bring them back, the rules need to be fixed. For one, I feel that in all circumstances, a LAM should be inferior to anything else out there.
In an aerospace fight, that's already accomplished. They got a shot, but they're clearly outclassed.
Mech on Mech, they suffer from needing to invest in to the tonnage of the LAM equipment.
But the air-mech mode needs fixing. I'd do the following, to ensure that Mechs can beat them:
* Make them more fragile. A failed PSR after being hit by *any* amount of damage results in an automatic fall. The higher you are, the more damage.
* Flak rules would apply to them.
* Either their jump ratings drop, or they have to pay in heat for them. Sure, it's nice that you can jump 18, but here's 18 heat to deal with.
*Give a to-hit bones for attacking a LAM because of it's larger surface area. Those wings must catch more grief.
* Also force a critical roll on result's 3 and 11, to simulate the vulnerability of the wings.
You know, just some thoughts. =)
Paul
