Okay here is a challenge for you folks:

Design a frigate that meets the following:

Naval Autocannons and Lasers
Secondary armament is only ACs and Lasers.

No fighters.

Class name is Cataphract (yes I know there is a mech with the same name).

Also please give your vessel a name so we can tell them apart.

Okay on this one I am going with a tonnage cap of 700,000 tons.

Let's see what you guys come up with. On the fluff side, if you want the Cataphracts in the current time line, then do so. If you want it in your own timeline that you use then feel free to do that. I am looking for interesting fluff to go with the ship.

Beyond that have fun!

700,000 tons is some frigate.

Secondary armament is ACs and lasers - does that include or exclude LAMS?

Edit:
Never mind. I won't be having room for it anyways.

The 700,000 tons is the upper limit. It might be better to go below that for some reason or another. That is up to the builders...looking forward to seeing what you have in mind.

Both would be excellent. I am all for posting them since that will give us more to talk about and allow folks to improve their designs and all that.

Manufacturer: Federated-Boeing Interstellar
  Location: Galax
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
The aftermath of the Federated Commonwealth Civil War left both nations'
militaries decimated and in shambles do to the ferocity of fighting on both
sides. No fiercer had the fighting been then in the skies above various world
where massive warships maneuvered to there deaths in order to allow the ground
troops a chance to do what they need to do. With the ever expanding fleets of
House Marik and House Liao poised at there soft under belly, House Davion
began production of its next generation Warship whose job it would be provide
in close protection from to heavier Warships. Many lessons had been learned by
during the Civil War, among them the need for maneuverable heavily armed and
armored Warships that could provide for itself and its fleet effective
Anti-Aerofighter cover. The results of this effort first sailed free of its
moorings in 3069 at the Federated-Boeing Interstellar Shipyards in the Galax
system; it was christened the Cataphract Class Fleet Support Frigate. This
name was chosen do to the ships immense armor plates and likely also as a jab
at House Liao.

==Capabilities:==
The Cataphract Class Warship masses in at 610,000 tons and is powered by
a fusion power core that produces a maintainable 3 Gs of acceleration. This
places the frigate at just above the maneuverability of most heavy warships,
the very ships it was designed to protect. In order to perform this protection
duty, the frigate is equipped with a battery of weapons that provide a good
punch against both Warships and Fighters alike. The primary Anti-Fighter
armaments are high response dual autocannon turrets supplied with enough
ammunition to outlast most engagements. The autocannons chosen for these
systems are the newly developed rotary autocannon class 5, which proved itself
in the Civil War. These variable speed autocannons can provide at a moments
notice a hail of bullets that can damage and disable most fighters who stray
to close or stay to long. In addition, the frigate is equipped with dual naval
autocannon turrets in the case were a enemy warship threatens the frigate or
the fleet. These cannons are fairly evenly distributed through out the ships
hull allowing for a full 360 degree cover of fire. Despite the presence of
these weapons, the captains of these frigates are encouraged not to take there
frigates into a ship on ship engagement but are to instead the heavier
warships fight these engagements as the frigates provide anti-fighter cover.
To insure its survivability and to allow the frigate to perform its job,
the frigate is equipped with an unprecedented 1,537 tons of armor plating,
which was originally planned to be made of standard materials but was later
changed to Lamellor Ferro-carbide. No other ship in history of this weight
class has mounted such a large amount armor plating: This is wear the
Cataphract Class Frigate gets its name sake because the word Cataphract refers
defensive armor used for the whole body and often for cavalry. However, the
thick armor plating of the frigate is not its only defense. In addition to
thick armor, the ship mounts high response quad-arrayed anti-missile systems.
These auto-tracking guns are designed to destroy incoming missile before they
can hit the ship and are supplied with an ample amount of ammunition.
The 231 man crew is accorded a moderate amount of comfort when aboard the
cramped confines of the ship in the way of two 50m diameter gravity decks
equipped with an assortment of recreational equipment and well supplied mess.
The mess is supplied with a years worth of food and water even thou most crew
men serve only a 6 month rotation. The ship also contains a cargo bay, two
dropship hard points, and two small craft bays for ferrying supplies and
personnel around. In addition, the ships contains massive fuel tanks that
provide the frigate with 6 months worth of fuel at a 1 G acceleration, which
is more then sufficient for almost all operations. Unless a massive accident
or major combat occurs, the frigate should only need to re-supply every 6
months to a year. Should catastrophic incident should occur not only is the
frigate equipped with advanced medical bay but also is equipped with 41 escape
pods capable of taking the entire crew to safety.
Overall, the Cataphract Class Frigate would be a welcome addition to any
Navy; it is much needed relief and possibly a savior for the thread bare
Federated Sun Navy.

Okay...now I know I have to back and rethink what I had in mind for what will be taking on this class, one example and it's has me thinking twice about getting anywhere near it even with some of other custom designs I have seen....damn fine ship and excellent fluff.

FP needs to hire you for fluff writting.

After Katherine Steiner-Davion's surrender to her brother, intelligence
analysts immediately descended upon Davion Palace so as to ensure that they
knew the full extent of her activities. Among other things, these analysts
found multiple references to a "Project Cataphract," a name ambiguous enough
to mean practically anything.

The breakthrough came when a known Katherine loyalist was arrested while
attempting to leave New Avalon. He was delivered by New Avalon authorities to
MIIO, and ... interrogated vigorously. From this interrogation, it was learned
that the man was a courier, tasked with carrying messages which Katherine did
not want intercepted by ComStar to their destinations aboard civilian
transports. They also learned the nature and location of "Project
Cataphract."

Project Cataphract was, as one analyst put it, "a conspiracy theorist's
dream." Authorized by Katherine in 3063, Project Cataphract was a successful
effort to secretly construct a shipyard complex in an uninhabited system, with
the intention of using the WarShips from this shipyard to turn the tide of the
Civil War. The captured courier made mention of setbacks which ultimately kept
the Cataphract yards from contributing to the war effort, but was rendered
incapable of elaborating by overzealous interrogation. The subject was
subsequently terminated, and the overzealous interrogater is facing inquiry.

An impromptu task force, including the FSS Simon Davion, two Aerospace
regiments, a regiment of Marines, and assorted DropShips and JumpShips, was
formed and dispatched to the uninhabited system in which the "Cataphract" yard
was located. Upon the task force's arrival, the defending loyalist aero wing
moved immediately to engage them. They surrendered just as quickly when they
discovered they were facing 6 to 1 odds.

The "Cataphract" facilities consisted of a large recharge station of an unkown
class and a few independent building slips. While a number of DropShips and
two Aero wings were left behind to oversee recovery of the surrendered
fighters, the Simon and the assault DropShips began their attempt to capture
the station. A company of Marines was diverted to capture the one WarShip near
completion (out of three), while the rest of the regiment began with the
station. Unfortunately, they did not move fast enough.

Before the Marines could secure the station's command center, the loyalist
commander detonated the thermonuclear self-destruct charges scattered
throughout the station and building slips. The single captured WarShip managed
to escape its building slip before this occured, but the other two were
destroyed, along with the station. Also lost were a Union Class DropShip, a
Leopard Class DropShip, thirteen Aerospace fighters, some 700 Marines, some
400 loyalist personnel, and some 1,200 civilian workers and dependents.

Faced with nothing but an empty star system, the task force charged its jump
drives, left the system, and reported the mission's results. The task force's
units were returned to more usual duties, and the lost Marine regiment
disbanded. The officer in charge of the company which captured the intact
WarShip will face a court-martial for executing the prisoners
captured along with the WarShip (some 70 workers and crew) after the station's
destruction.

For lack of a better name, the ship was designated the "Cataphract Class" and
sent to Galax, where her constuction was finished. A month later the
Cataphract, christened Belladonna, entered service.

==Capabilities:==
Apparently worked up under heavy time and resource constraints, the Cataphract
design seems to have at least one feature intended to annoy each FedSuns admiral.
It's slow, with a relatively short fuel endurance. Its weapons are overwhelmingly
ammunition dependant, and equipped with a short ammo supply. It has a very small
miscellanious cargo capacity. It has only two DropShip docking collars.
And, possibly worst of all, it has no fighters.

Nonetheless, the Federated Suns can't afford to just dismiss a WarShip,
especially after the losses of the Civil War. And it's generally agreed that
the Cataphract design has some advantages - heavy firepower and heavy armor
being foremost among them.

The Cataphract is armed primarily for anti-ship combat. Heavy naval autocannon
are mounted in the ship's nose and flanks, backed up by lighter NACs and heavy
naval lasers. For anti-fighter defense, the Cataphract carries a number of
heavy LBX autocannon and large lasers in each weapons arc. The strength of the
nose and broadside weapons arcs means that aft firepower necessarily suffers,
so the Cataphract mounts somewhat more of its armor aft than is usual.

I was just wondering. One of the ship classes of In Death Ground and its sequel (The Shiva Option) is the Cataphract class, an anti-missile/anti-fighter ship armed with lots of point defense. That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the name "Cataphract," (though I decided against making it; not my kind of WarShip) and I thought it interesting that that was what you came up with.

Edit:
For some reason, it sounds like I'm accusing you of stealing the idea when I re-read this post. If it sounds like that to me, it might sound like that to others, so I want to have it said that that's not what I'm trying to say. I just thought it an interesting occurance, and wondered if you'd gotten an inspiration from the book or if it just ended up like that by chance.

Oh, then i probibly haven't read it. May need to thou, i love space warships.

Actually, i started with all energy warships and designed 5 preliminary designs. 1 at 700k, 1 at 610k, 1 at 450k, 1 at 300k, and 1 at 220k. While designing the 450k [actualy my 5th design] i got this wicked idea in my head.

In B5 the earth warships have these dual rotary barrel like point defense cannons for anti-fighter work. well i was makin all sorts of daka daka sounds and started thinking about makin a anti-fighter frigate using LBX cannons. Well that ida quickly got upgraded as i saw the stats for the different weapons. ya you get a -1 to-hit but its so little dmg thats its worthless. That is when it dawned on me and i just had to plot it out. a ship armed with rotary acs.

i later crafted the story around the basic idea.

ps: i didn't take it that way, but i can see how i could have lol.

pss: i always equip my warships with PDS. a lesson i learned from star wars.

Yeah, you'd think the Rebels would've perfected that sooner, killing an ISD with a squadron (or two or three) of X-Wings. How does "the Stackpole Manuever" sound for a name? I tend to like putting LAMS on WarShips (I like energy armaments), but I couldn't find the tonnage here for that and everything else I wanted. Something had to go, and here it was the AMS.

Strangely enough, I never thought of using RACs here. But I like the idea. Would you mind if I drop my LBXs for RACs?

The idea is from the novel Death Ground, I like the ship and thought it would be an interesting one for BT...

Uhmm seeinghow I posted the challenge, wouldn't you need to be asking me this?

To answer the question, yes the idea did come from In Death Ground, liked the ship, and thought hey, how could this one and it's sisters be made in a BT setting...so after having seven months to think about it and wanting to see what others could do with the idea as well I posted it in the hopes that we could see some interesting ships and not the same old thing done again.
