How many folks out there are running Modded PC's? I am wondering how common it is. Mine is getting kind of old, but still doing okay, and I want to know what folks may have put together. Saving money on a slow upgrade path rather than plunking down 4 grand on a Alienware or other such monster.

Modded? I don't have any gear that you couldn't buy in a store (at some point), but I assembled all my boxens from scratch. Why pay through the nose for a top-notch package when it's cheaper to do it myself? Besides, this way I've learned enough that I'm able to install newer parts when needed.
I've noticed that the companies selling basic packages with optional upgrades rip you off when pricing those upgrades. Extra memory costs more than it would in a respectable store and the same goes for a faster processor. Why? These machines are assembled like you ordered them, it's not like they have to swap parts on a basic one.
