I agree to a point.
I believe that those who work to safeguard our lives should be honored by having a day devoted to them.
( at LEAST!)
After all the fire department is always the first responders in most emergency\'s.
My only gripe is that these people were and are selfless caring hero\'s and have been long before Sept 11 and after.
What happened that day in a abjective sense was that people noticed them doing what they do every day because we lost some and the news rammed it down our gullets.
Where was the loss of fire fighters bigger?
Sept 11?
The great Chicago fire?
The London Blitz?
Hiroshima?
( firefighters and emergency people don\'t all live and work in New York.)
But everyone is so fixated on sept 11. and what happened that day.
Its like people either cannot or will not let that go, and get on with the living part of life instead of going back to the past.
( I know I should talk after what I have been thinking and feeling since My fiance Eric died)
But we as a nation have always had these people doing the job and sometimes giving their lives for another.
The BEST I ever read In BattleTech ( and one of the main reasons I read the books) was because of a MechWarrior check code.
It was from a Poem.
\" No greater Love\"
That should be those peoples motto.
It fits them perfectly and HAS fit them throughout history and god help us it will keep us in the future.

Possibly the best motto I have ever heard is this one: "That others may live."

Do not forget at Chernobl as well. Every firefighter that went, died. Most of them died a painful death 1-5 days after the fire was out. The fire trucks used at the sight are all parked in a lot a few miles away.

The book I'm currently trying to sell bore the title "No Greater Love" about three drafts ago.

I might hijack "That Others Might Live" for the title. Maybe a chapter title. Who knows.

I'm in agreement with Daphne on the larger point, like a train derailment, September 11, 2001 just made a big enough splash we noticed. It isn't like firefighters and cops don't die every day in the line of duty. I'm not sure of the wisdom conflating a terrorist attack and the duties of our civilian protectors. It would be like holding a holiday to recognize fallen soldiers on December 7. (incidentally, I always thought doing it on Armistace Day was a nice symbol).

Back on mottos, my personal favorites have always been "Peace is our Profession," from US Missile Command, and "To Free the Oppresed," the collective motto of Special Operations Command (each of the special forces also has their own motto).
