Targeting and Tracking System: Army Corporation Type 29K
-------------------------------------------
Overview:
A new variant of the Atlas to roll out from Kressly Warworks.
This is Kressly's first attempt in remaking the King of
Pain. Initially plans were called to build the variant using the
Draconis Combine AS7-K but prohibitive cost prevent such
implementation, so Kressly settled for using the timeless AS7-D as
the base for the new variant.
The original AS7-D is the premier IS assault mech of choice.
Incredibly thick armor and backed with 2 very large weapons and an
array of backup weapons plus the Death's Head image made the mech to
be feared by all pilots across the Innersphere. However the Clan
invasion proved that Death's Head is no longer the invulnerable
machine it was. Clans with their longer range weaponary can often
pick the Death's Head to pieces. The Draconis AS7-K rectify the long
ranged weakness some what but the use of a vulnerable XL engine
effectively halved the AS7-D life span. Plus the AS7-K runs pretty
hot.
Kressly engineers now have their hands' full. They need a
mech that can engage at the ranges the Clans normally do, while still
maintaining strong close range firepower and rugged protection.
------------------------------------------------
Capabilities:
The first major upgrade is the use of Endo-Steel and Double
heatsink technology. No easy feat considering the Atlas being worked
on is said to date back to the Starleague which meant that many parts
are old and hard to service. Kressly's techs literally went through
the meat grinder for 3 weeks in order to modify the engine and the
internal structure. The refit yield positive results in the end and
the new AS7-Z is now ready for further upgrading.
Kressly naturally retained the Doombud LRM-20 missile rack
located at the left torso. The LRM-20 has always being the powerful
long range punch on the Atlas and Kressly saw no reason to remove
it, however the LRM-20 now has a few brilliant tweaks. Mounted
with the Doombud is a powerful Artemis IV fire control system. The
Artemis IV allows the pilot to land more accurate salvos and thus
indirectly conserving ammunition. Another important upgrade is the
addition of a CASE, which help safely contain the ammunition in this
war machine. 360 missiles supply the Doombud which gives the pilot 18
reloads and will certainly help ensure the Atlas remains a threat at
long range.
A new addition to the long range arsenal is a brand new
Blackwell Fury Gauss Rifle that rest at the right torso where the old
Mechhunter Class 20 autocannon should be. Supplied with 3 tons of
ammo and being CASE protected as well, the Fury has the potential to
rip off an entire mech's head with a single slug. Coupled with the
Doombud, the AS7-Z has a one two punch against mechs of lighter
tonnage while still capable of ravaging heavies and assaults at long
range.
Purists might be disappointed by the loss of the old AC 20
but Kressly was quick to rectify the short range armament. The 4
Hellion V medium remain but are now bolstered by a pair of Harpoon
6-S Streak SRM-6 missiles packs. Supplied with a ton of ammo each,
Kressly hopes that the new Streak 6s help mitigate the loss of the
old 20. Although its true that the paired Streaks cannot create the
large gaping hole possible with the Mechhunter but at least every
single missile hits which is a nice factor itself. This also makes
fighting fast moving mechs with close ranged weapons less aggravating
for the Atlas mechwarrior.
A single flamer in the centre torso rounds out the weapon
array serving as an anti-infantry measure. Traditionally, infantry
can be one of the Atlas greatest enemies due to its lack of
anti-personal weapons but now with a flamer that spouts huge flames
around the Atlas, infantry will be much less inclined to close on to
the great beast. Not to mention that the lighting effect of the
flamer gives the Atlas a really eerie glow in a dark night. The
flamer also has several other uses as well, for flushing out
garrisoned buildings to scorching a forest to cover the AS7-Z
retreat, its a useful utility weapon.
Weapon placement has being taken into consideration as well,
Kressly designers want opponents of the AS7-Z to know that they are
outgunned and are not paid enough to die. The weapon placement is mostly
kept to similar to the AS7-D, but the rearward centre torso laser has
being flipped forward and the Streak 6s are delibrately placed at the
arms, allowing a closed in opponent to have a full view of what's in
store for him.
Since the machine is based on a standard engine, the AS7-Z is
tough as the AS7-D can be. 19 tons of Durallex Heavy Special gives
the AS7-Z unparallelled protection making the AS7-Z resillient
against most attacks. The Communication system is still the Army
Comm. Class 5. Appearing as a a small disk antenna when outside of
the roomy head, the AS7-Z can conduct limited surface to space
communications with little trouble which makes it ideal as a command
mech. The mech's hand still remained for obvious uses and can be used
for picking up objects or just punching.
The only sole real critism of the AS7-Z is that it has make a long
return trip back to the AS7-D, ammunition dependence. Although Kressly
tries to keep the mech well supplied with ammo, the AS7-Z would
eventually run out. But Kressly felt that the firepower alone would be a
large enough trade-off.
----------------------------------------------------
Deployment:
Currently in production, the AS7-Z is actually offered more as a
refit then anything else cos mainly the mech is quite expensive to
build for the small corporation.

I don't consider Endo Steel a refit
But it's a nice version, meant for getting up close and giving them pie. Hot pie.

I agree with Erenon about the endo-steel. I think you'd have to build a whole new 'Mech.
But this Atlas is awesome. I like the Streaks especially, and the flamer is a nice addition. Those two are so good that I don't even miss the autocannon much. Not only is the flamer good for infantry, but you can heat 'Mechs up with it if they get that close. And since most 'Mechs don't carry flamers, they can't return the favor.
In other news, I have now visited this site 666 times. Just thought I'd share that...

Add me on the list of those who doubt Endo Steel is a refit.
But that's unimportant when considering the mech itself. I don't miss the AC/20 here. The Streak racks are scary things when you consider all those location rolls after a hit. Floating criticals are bound to happen. You've also doubled the long-range firepower, adding the most fearsome headchopper available. Thumbs up, and where can I sign a purchase order?
The fluff is good too. I especially liked this: "Kressly designers want opponents of the AS7-Z to know that they are outgunned and are not paid enough to die"
