Well, I spent most of the day on the program and had a blast! I played three battles, ending the day with a monster one that took 42 turns and almost 4.5 hours!

I tried my Marik work-in-process lance in the first one (3025): Orion-K, Orion-VA, Trebuchet-5N and Rifleman-3N. I just generated a generic Steiner force: Zeus-6T, Crusader 3R, Griffin-N and a Fire Javelin 10F.
Well, seeing as the first shot that hit the Trebuchet, a ML from the Javelin, hit the CT critically, caused 3 crits and blew out the gyro, along with an engine hit, I ended up loosing. Though I gave it a good shot.

General BT thoughts after the game:
The Orion-VA absolutely ROCKS!!!! Ok, it costs 1111 pts (how poetic) and doesn't really have long-range weaponry. But there it is, spewing out laser bolts, missile strikes and AC shells as if there wasn't a tomorrow (to put a German proverb into use). And all Orions are such zombies! I didn't really like the standard one, that one can't handle its heat at all.
The Rifleman fares rather badly, due to lack of armour (basically half of the Orion's), if put into the frontlines. I was forced to, after the game had progressed somewhat, since the Trebuchet had left a gap.
The bot's Crusader did not impress.....


2nd game - a project that I had laid aside after only half painting it - soon to be resumed. 2 Marauder-5S, Warhammer 7S and Battlemaster 3S. I chose two clanners as opponents: Mad Cat Prime and Thor A. That game was a joke. I had the lvl 6 cliff facing me. I was stuck on a lvl4 cliff. They could move, I couldn't. I aborted after having lost a Warhammer, and two half Marauders. Though his Thor was also half dead and his Mad Cat was armless. Yeah, on an even board I could've taken them....

General BT thoughts after the game:
Once again, it was breathtaking to see how brittle IS 'mechs are when facing the clans. However, the revelation was that the IS lance that I fielded also wields awesome firepower. Especially the Marauders. The 5S version is not only the upgrade that sticks most closely to the original, but it is also the one that deals out the pain!


3rd game - the monster one. I took my work-in-process Steiner assault lance: Atlas, Zeus 6S, Zeus 6T, Crusader 3R and piled up a Kurita horde. Er, well, two lances, to be precise: 1 Dragon, 1 Shadow Hawk K, 1 Phoenix Hawk K, 2 Jenner D (standard SRM ones), 2 Panthers, 1 Wasp K. Because they were then almost 1500 pts over my BV, I equalled them down to the last point, by fielding a tank lance: 2 Bulldogs, 1 Vedette, 1 heavy hover APC.

Well, the tanks were gone by the time I had killed the Jenner. At which point the Zeus 6T was already going around with a cockpit that only had like 2 pts of armour left. Well, the other Jenner gets behind the Crusader for the very first time, and yes, kicks and blows out the RT's ammo. I'm down to three 'mechs against 7. However, there was a canyon on the board. I managed to trap the Dragon in there, that was the end of that one. The Wasp jumped in there, trying to save its leader, but only managed to get killed, too. At that stage, both the Zeus 6T and Atlas were down to half armour and had collected several head hits.
After that, I used assault 'mechs to play cat and mouse! And ended up mopping up the board without actually loosing any of mine. But it was such a close call. With bad luck, I would've suddenly been reduced to one Zeus 6S. Which I had named the leader. And it came through with only superficial scratches. Yay!

General BT thoughts after the game:
Dammit! The Atlas is nigh-on useless for its points! It needs more ammo! It needs more long range weaponry! It probably doesn't need the rear ML and all those heat sinks! But it is a beautiful zombie....
Panthers are dangerous even to assault 'mechs. PPCs really hurt. However, even with their 6.5 tons of armour, they are very weak when standing up straight to assault 'mechs even for one turn.
The Zeus 6T is one of the best 3025 assault 'mechs. Full stop. Quick and just about the best gun mix.
However: when fielding them side by side, I was really surprised that the 6S kept up its side of the deal very convincingly! The 6T hurt more when it fired. The 6S was able to fire more (like, everything, every turn, even when in fire). Which is a really good thing when facing smaller 'mechs.
So yeah, my recommendation to Steiners: when facing smaller enemies you will both need to chase them and fire as many shots as possible. They don't have to be the deadliest, but the volume of fire is important as modifiers will be high. So, take a 6S against Kurita, whenever possible!

You know, I was kind of dissapointed with megamek untill I recently realised I was using a long out of date version :/

I got the latest release (not 100% stable, but still useable) and to my delight I could fire Lrms Indirectly, aim shots with a targeting computer, Switch ppc feild inhibitors off, stop clanners from using physical attacks, use special ammunition, and play against a bot with double blind rules switched on. Everything that had bothered me with the stable release has been fixed

Expect to hear more from me about megamek from now on

I love megamek too, although i do hate the way you set up a game, (naming and skilling the pilots) taking around 30mins. Just to start the game and the enemy put a gauss round through your mechs cockpit.

The computer seems amazingly cocky with its hits. I take at least 4 or 5 head shots in a game. But like your critically hit trebuchet, i guess its just luck. If it was against a person i'd have a great laugh about it. Just a bit more critical because it is a computer.

Anyway, to get to my point, love the game. I like using vehicles. Although i don't like giving the computer vehicles because they cant seem to work out immobile vehicles and sit there forever.

I would agree as well, the Orion-VA is an absolute dynamo in my forces, it wipes the floor with anything its size that it can close with.

LOL, I've always used the dev releases, just cause of that.
Plus I like artillery, which is ALSO in the development snapshots. Oh, and Max Tech mods and all kinda stuff!
