Can SRMs and LRMs be partially fired? For example a LRM-20 is mounted on the mech, can the pilot opt to fire a smaller salvo, just 5, 10, 15? The smaller salvos would still be treated as normally fired from that size launcher. As well as ammo being tracked accordingly. Just curious if there is any published rules on this or maybe some common practice.

Why would you even consider doing something like that?

Yeah its a well known fact that in the boardgame that a larger LRM barrage does more damage than a couple of smaller ones if the LRM 20 rolls a hit.

It is neither in the rules nor is it a common practice.

Really?

Average damage from 1 LRM20 is 12.
Average damage from 2 LRM10s is 12.
Average damage from 4 LRM5s is 12.

I'm not a math genious, but the potential for maximum damage may be higher for an LRM20 than 2 10's or 4 5's, but the average damage is exactly the same.

Average damage aside, why would anyone want to fire only part of a larger rack? It means you'll do damage to your target at a slower rate, something very bad in Btech combat.

Hmmm... I think I see where he's coming from.

Some roleplaying games (notably Palladium Books' Rifts and Robotech) have missile launchers that lack the -ahem- payload of Battletech. The launchers may hold, say 20 missiles, and one reload, with the option of firing salvos from 1 to 10 or 20 missiles. In this case, firing all 20 at one target would be a waste.
In a more down-home BattleTech example, and old computer game called Megatron had a MadCat and a Vulture stalking each other in a labyrinth. Each Mech had 2 20-missile launchers, fired one at a time, and once the missile were fired, that's it.

I was looking at it in a ammo conservation mindset. long campaigns, or not the need to waste an entire salvo on something that doesnt need it. that and simple curiosity.

The best way of conserving resources in Btech campaigns is to take down the targets as fast as possible. Then you can salvage their ammo for your own use.

Capturing supply depots is another time-honored tactic, too.

Maybe with SRM-6 with one ton of SRMs (= 100 missiles) it should have 16 salvos and four missiles would remain in ammo bin.

It doesn't work that way...

Assuming you don't hit it by accident if your LRMS missed the target and smash into the depot.

But oh well at least you get massive fireworks and blow up all the defenders and their mechs thus saving ammo too

Aside from the OOC remark, i never saw any rules that allow partial LRM launching. It might be more useful on OS Rocket launchers though *shrug*

Partial missile launches generally wont be useful...remeber that the missiles we shoot in battletech are 2-6 KG rockets that work best fired in mass (they do 1 or two damage a piece)

Besides, partial firings would screw up the reloading mechanism and other bad stuff.

And there are other advantages to taking multiple LRM5 launchers versus single LRM20 launchers involving weight and reloads.
