Hopefully those of you more knowledgeable about computers can help me out here.

Yesterday, my computer (Gateway laptop, WinXP Home) froze on me while playing a game. A not unheard of occurance. I waited for some time to see if it would recover (which happens), and after a while, just turned it off. It restarted (and continues to) with the menu about safe mode, but no matter what I select, it can't start. Everytime it tries, it gives me a BSOD with an "Unmountable_boot_volume" error. I don't have a boot disc, and don't know where to go from here.

The machine should be able to boot from a CD. Don't you have a WinXP CD or the "system recovery" CD these companies like to use?

Yep. I found one after I posted this; a Norton disc. The most I learned was that drive C: is not accessible, and does not contain a recognizeable file system. Which is not encouraging.

Try to find your WinXP CD so you can run the recovery console. No matter how cheap the PC it should come with a system CD of some kind.

some omputers come with a craete boot cd utility you are supposed to run, and no set of recovery disks.

If your system has those recovery disks find them and boot them. it sounds your FAT/ FAT32 or NT file index probably got corrupted. If you have a bootable floppy and know how to fix the SYSTEM file from the command prompt, you might be able to fix things. Otherwise you definately need to find a friend who has his certificates proving he has access to and can use the uber geek/ secret chimp stuff. No friend? find a shop. Did you buy it retail? the store you bought from can help. your warranty is (probably) expired so I wouldn't expect much help if you ordered it direct.

I would pretty much kiss what ever data was on that disk good bye tho'
