OVERVIEW:
One of the most vulnerable assets that any world, and especially those
worlds of the Periphery, has are those assets that cannot be readily
protected: underwater, isolated islands, and exposed deep rivers.
These points of access can be penetrated by BattleMechs, but most
Periphery worlds do not have the BattleMech assets to defend all of
these exposed areas.
For example, in 3062 the pirate band Cain's Corsairs landed on the
Colony world of Concord. Concord had been established, not only for
the stable enviornment, but also because there was a large amount of
industrial quality minerals lying just ready to be harvested. The Taurian
Concordat and Magistry of Canopus did their best to keep this hidden,
for if news got out, such a site would be targeted by raiders. They
dispatched some armor units to guard the site, but overlooked one
weakness: the ocean diamond mines. The beaches near the Colony
were covered in diamonds, and they were harvested by small boats
and brought to shore for processing. Processing was done right
against the beach, and when the Corsairs attacked, they were able to
ignore the armored defenses, march underwater, come up and take
what they wished. They then turned around, went back underwater,
and left the same way they had come in. Hovercraft, being stuck to
the surface, only provided target practice and did nothing to stop the
Corsairs.
While on Bryant, the Comintern had run into a similiar situation. Since
moving most of their naval assets had been lost, but slowly they are
seeking to rebuild. Ural Corporatoin announced that their Sea
Technologies Division has finished work on the Mk 202 Astepta, or
U-3. Already the Alliance, Concordat, Magistry, and Marian Hegemony
have expressed interest in the design, though it has not yet been
determined how many of these units will be available for sale. The
Comintern has expressed an interest in having C-Bills flow in to their
State, but has yet to determine how defense might be compromised.
Already the older Wolf is in place to be upgraded to match the Astepta
design, if events conspire to make that necessary.
CAPABILITITES:
The U-3 is built around three semi-modular torpedo systems, and a
central storage area for ammunition, the long and narrow Astepta is
often cramped in the combat sections of the submarine, although this
is not often considered a problem by the crew, who appreciate the
ammenities the machine does have to offer, such as ample sleeping
bunks that are incorporated into the cargo section. When fully
stocked, the Astepta is able to go for two weeks without resuply, and
though crowded at first, the Astepta becomes more comfortable very
quickly.
When full with two squads of infantry, things are different. The boat is
only built for three, and thus the adhoc systems in place for 17, are
neither convienent, fully up to date, or remotely adequate. Many
infantry assigned to Astepta's for transport report that they have never
looked forward to combat so much in their life. As a result, rules in
place establish Astepta's as infantry carriers only during times of great
need, and may never take on more then 7 passangers.
What infantry have come to appreciate, however, is the heavy
firepower that the Astepta is able to lay on their landing zone with the
two machine guns mounted in a turret at the front of the machine.
When surfaced and unloading troops or eqiupment, the Astepta is
able to lay down a withering hail of fire against opposing infantry.
Though heavily armed infantry can pose a threat to the Astepta, they
often do not encounter such. Their role, when carrying infantry, is
stealth insertion. A role that they fulfill very well.
DEPLOYMENT:
Currently the U-3 Mk 202 Astepta is only deployed with the Comintern.
The Magistry of Canopus has bought two for a trial period, and will
make a decision on purchase latter. Other states which have
expressed interest have yet to follow through on that interest with
purchases.
VARIANTS:
The only variant currently in consideration strips all torpedo systems for
more cargo space. Just as with the Wolf design, this cargo model has
proved ammazingly useful for resuply at sea, as well as acting as a
supply ship for a wolf pack. In such a case, the Astepta usually carries
one or two extra crew: a quartermaster and a cook. Wolf packs in the
Comintern are sought after assignments because of this care for the
wellbeing of the sailors.
NOTABLE CREW/VEHICLE:
The most notable crew of an U-3 Mk 202 Astepta is actually from the
Mule, or cargo hauling, variant. Chief Petty Officer Anastasia Kania the
cook for Wolf Pack 294 is considered to be one of the culinary
geniuses of the time. Having trained at a culinary institute in the
Magistry of Canopus before signing up with the CDF, she has applied
unique solutions to the food problems that are often being dealt with in
the Navy. When not actively hunting, she has encouraged sailors to
fish the seas, and is known for combining these catches with the
MREs, normally all that is availble, into ammazingly tasty meals that are
the pride of WP294. Moral of the unit has sky rocketed as a result,
and rumor has it that the Admirality is thinking of starting its own
culinary institute with a newly promoted Captain Kania in charge. It has
yet to be determined if WP294 will come with her.

hahah i love that gal to be part of any combat crew ! Great tasting meals mmmh.
The subby looks great as a work horse but there should be a variant with long ranged weaponary. Maybe a heavier sub with LRMs are in order hmm ?
