This is something I just got to thinking about.
Do the larger cities in the Inner Sphere still use subway systems?
If nothing else, I imagine that whoever could control the entrance / exits would have a major advantage in an urban combat situation.

The way I've heard most worlds described is that they are lucky have any kind of rail system at all, let alone one built underground.
(I got this impression from a line in the fluff of the Long Tom, "Most of the Inner Sphere's rail tracks are in poor shape, however.")

I think major towns on major worlds will still have Undergrounds but on other worlds there can be Undergrounds left from better times: They are not functioning any more but the tunnels will be there anyway!
These old tunnels would be crucial to anyone who defends a town!

well they do. There was an instance in Coventry where the Coventry defense forces uses the "tunnels" to conduct raids against Clan Jade Falcon after they were outgunned and overrunned at the surface.
Of course, they were mainly infantry and light vehicles left, so the tunnels were easy to use.

Also in one of the Gray Death novels they used a Maglev system to transport their mechs
