An... interesting design for a monitor I came up with a while ago. Again, suggestions and comments are welcomed.
AeroTech 2 Vessel Technical Readout

Class/Model/Name: Akatsuki-class Escort
Tech: Inner Sphere / 3062
Vessel Type: Monitor (JumpShip Transportable)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
The Akatsuki-class was designed for a number of rather unique purposes. The
first is an anti-pirate role. The Akatsuki would attach to a Jumpship's
docking point, it's unique shape disguising it as an attached dropship or some
other innocuous object. If the JumpShip and it's cargo were to come under
attack from pirates or other raiders, the Akatsuki could detach and make the
pirates regret their mistake. Due to the high cost of the ship, this is most
likely to be seen with military convoys which warrant more protection than
dropships can offer but not so much that a WarShip is necessary.
The second role is as a vehicle for surprise assaults. A seemingly harmless
JumpShip could jump in-system, carrying just the Akatsuki, or a number of
dropships in addition to the Akatsuki, providing a nasty surprise for anyone
who was expecting a simple dropship assault.
The last role in which the Akatsuki could serve is far from unique. Due to the
lack of K-F Drive common to all monitors, the Akatsuki could serve as a
reasonably expendable escort for much larger and more expensive WarShips.
==Capabilities:==
The Akatsuki carries a fair sized weapons array, certainly more than most
ships can take, combined with fairly heavy armour for a ship its size.
While the Akatsuki carries it's weapons in a limited number of bays, it was
designed for roles which required more focussed firepower and situations in
which there would be reletively few targets to be handled, mainly small
dropships or a few fighters.
For strictly military roles, the Akatsuki does carry an impressive array of
capital weapons for a ship so small. It's broadsides are more than capable of
deal with

As has always been my practice, I give most of my critisms in a counter design. Your design is interesting; however, it has many of the quirks that drive me abit loney. I also added a few of my astetic only changes [ie: cargo bays]

My changes:
As with all my designs I split up your standard scale weapons up into 2 and 4 gun groupings. I also removed multi-version guns and placed on only PPCs [ER to be exact.]
I then reorginized your weapon placements. Moved all Capital Weapons to Side Bays and placed most of the Standard Weapons in the For, Broad, and Aft bays. This offers 360 anti-fighter cover while maximizing your anti-ship cover. Yes, you do not get a devistating forward barrage, but you get more oppertunities to use them. I also added another MNPPC to get even pairs.
Further more, I reduced the number of shots on each Barracuda to 20 each and placed them in seperate bays. I like that you used Barracuda over other types. Many under estimate them because they forget the -2 to-hit and anti-fighter capabilities. SAM anyone? And they serve this feature better in individual bays.
As you did not state that this ship was ever to board another ship, I reduced the # of marines to 25 for mass. Likewise, I reduced escape systems to only 50 percent total.
Again so i could free mass, I reduced the spare parts to 1 percent even though i disliked doing so. I insist that a ship carry no less then 2 percent.
I then increased food and fuel to 6 month supply and then reoptimized armor to a SI of 256 and plating of 642.
Also reduced Heatsinks to match heat output.

I actually hadn't realized I'd forgotten to mention the marines were for boarding, but that's what they were there for, sorry.
While I do like the redesign, I still prefer having the naval weapons spread out. It's not often that it will be facing a foe where it needs to focus its firepower, and having it spread out some serves it better when working solo, or mostly solo, as it would be for surprise assaults and pirate hunting.
Just explaining my reasoning.
As for the two and four gun bays, I was just lazy.

Then get them back from the cargo bays.

Have you looked at the combat arcs? the side arcs have the greatest field of fire. A pair of weapons in the for-side arcs cover ruffly 66 percent of the ships possible arcs with the exclusion of directly forward and the aft arc. Where you had them placed limited there usability greatly; my arc placement, however, has everywhere but directly in front and behind covered by a capital weapon. In addition, a broad-side can now use 1/2 of the ships capital armerment. my reasoning.

Given that a lot of folks have been playing other space battle games, they tend to go with what worked in those when making AT2R ships...
And given how "bias" BT naval engagements can be, one can see why folks fall back on the older games for their weapons placement.

I just like having nose and aft weapons, I hadn't thought of the Fore sides and aft sides, however. It gives you the chance for a quick strike at range without having to change facing, for one, and allows you to cover your retreat; Very useful for a craft like this, given it's quick strike role.
For WarShips I do keep capital weapons (With the exception of missiles) in the broadside arcs, usually.
