I look at a map of the known Battletech Universe. I see a collection of dots...there is no definition of solar systems. Do the planets just float in an empty void? The center of the map is Terra, Old Earth. It then spans out from there. Is Each planet a solar system? I am just trying to understand how the planets for each of the Houses relate.

um... i guess you missed the part where those dots are described as the Inhabited Systems. Every one of those dots represents a Solar System not just the planet. IE: Solaris... the Game World is Solaris 7, meaning the 7th planet of the Solaris system.
