Inspired partly by discussions here on formations, which is part of tactical doctrine, and partly by reading I've been doing lately I decided to bring up alternate command structures.

My biggest itch here is something I've discovered, and greatly admire, about the Isralies. Specifically their air force. For them, the most capable leader.. leads. Regardless of rank. It is mission dependent. The most skilled/experienced pilot for the type of mission leads. So, there have been instances of lieutenants leading flights that include majors. I mean, WOW, what a concept. Let the guy who knows what the hell he's doing lead the way.

i plan on following this doctrine in RP games from now on, that includes my B & G unit.

I'm curious to hear what others have seen, heard, tried, etc...

My real life Army unit is like that up here in Canada. We've been tankers for most of the last 30years, and have only recently gone to reconnaissance, so many of our senior leaders don't have the expereince to do the job properly.

I took my Recce qualification courses, so I was a Master Corporal in charge of a troop (with Sgts and an officer under me...) Now, I'm a Sgt, and I have a junior LT as my observer.

My units use standard Federated Suns command structure, but that being said, personal initiative is highly prized, and the officers know it pays to listen to the enlisted men. (And lower officers.)

The new unit I play with is very much democratic in how we go about our missions.

We started a small Merc unit in the Periphery, and then voted to move ourselves into the Fed Suns for our next contract, we discussed our battle plans before going into action, we argued about a name, and came to a group decision about how to carry on into the future. We then played a game of rock / paper / scissors to see who would be CO, 2I/C, and Lance commanders (I got 2nd Lance).

Seems to be working well so far... except for the name... We were the Light Horse (couldn't come up with another part of that), then we ended up calling ourselves the North West Armoured Cavalry (I don't know what we're NW to though!)

I'd have to hear more about how the "most experience leader, leads" rule.

I cannot imagine being an LT who happens to have had some extra training in precision bombing being stuck in the position of Wing Commander when all I've ever commanded before was an element or a diamond.

That said, the Army Air Corps did similar things in WWII. Whichever pilot was in the front, every other pilot obeyed.

If the lead plane was piloted by a LT, then all the Captains and Majors followed his lead.

Course, if the mission failed, that poor LT was screwed.

Ok, for the Isralies, its more like this. Say some LT has 15 sorties of tank busting missions, and the major has 3. The LT leads. Its fairly basic really. But then, see, the Isralies see a hell of a lot of combat sometimes, so meh. But they don't just follow blindly either, the guy up front does need to have the ability to command. I guess it is just more based on each pilots skill, instead of just his rank. And I like and respect that.
