|
Request for designs seem to always be fun around here, whether you are the one requesting or the one participating. So here's one from me.
Request! Get me together a nice medium weight machine to lead a light scout/cavalry company. Suggestions and criteria will be below.
1> Suggest you base in on the Shadow Hawk chassis. Other chassis will be considered of course, but I have several Shadow Hawks on hand. I just like that over the shoulder cannon, and the general mobility of the design.
2> If you use an XL, be sure to have a DARN good reason for it. Though I admit they have uses, I am very much biased against them.
3> 5/8 minimum speed, with either MASC or Jump Jets to help maneuverability. JJs are preferred.
4> At least one long range ballistic weapon. AC/5 is about the minimum for this, Gauss Rifle is about the biggest. I would entertain the idea of a Plasma Rifle, but don't really know of anyone with the rules to construct it onto the frame. RAC/2 or Ultra AC/5 is good too. LB-5 isn't bad either. Minimum damage 5, minimum range comparable to AC/5.
5> Backup weaponry for medium and short range.
6> Low cost. I will look at more than just the actual cost of the machine though. If I see a machine mounting Streak SRMs and normal SRMs that are otherwise the same, the nod goes to the Streaks for saving ammo.
7> You can do level 1 if you like, and I won't complain. Suggested upgrade would be nice though. If nothing else, I'm gonna slap ferro and case on it because of criteria 4.
8> Level 3 is cool too if you feel like it. Just keep in mind, I might not use a Level 3 design. All depends on what you add, and how complicated it is to keep track of. Reactive Heatsinks, from the rejected tech thread, a good example. Neat stuff, but simple to keep track of as well.
9> If it helps at all, my pilot/company is working on the ability to use a special type of "dodge" movement, as per the rules for developing specialities in the Mercenary handbook. Therefore, maximum armor is not necessarily required, as I plan to have plenty of good modifiers to be hit. Also, this machine will likely be the heaviest thing around, unless something goes wrong.
Participants will all receive the satisfaction of sitting down with Heavy Metal Pro and having fun. They will also receive my personal thanks and congratulations, for it's worth.
Note: Back in the past I did have Wolfhound set up for this, but I restarted the universe for my group earlier in the year, and would like to try something different for my ride. Also had a Hatchetman that was given a lovely refit by Vagabod.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
When originally produced for Star League, the Shadow Hawk was considered
a multi-function 'Mech and exceeded even the designers' wildest expectations.
The contract specifically called for a medium 'Mech with both long- and
short-range weapons and with jump capability. The Shadow Hawk filled a number
of roles in the military forces, from recon to attack, due to its diverse
armaments that made it able to fit into almost any situation where a 'Mech
might be needed.
Given both its track record and popularity, the push to redesign this
venerable BattleMech began in the summer of 3066 when the Vicore group
contacted most of the house militaries with their idea. Kallon Industries,
Earthwerks Incorporated and ComStar all worked with the designers in the
evolution of this new Shadow Hawk. Recently, a call has gone out for a new
variant of this recent Shadow Hawk; one capable of leading a recon lance or
company.
==Capabilities:==
The new Shadow Hawk variant manufactured by Kallon Industries makes
extensive use of the latest technologies, including Endo Steel structure and
Ferro-Fibrous armor. In addition, the engine used is the standard CoreTek
fusion plant that the 'Mech originally used. However, do to additional
requirements placed upon the design in order to fulfill the requirements set
forth for the recon variant, Kallon Industries was required to drop the bulky
Ferro-Fibrous armor and standard CoreTek fusion plant in favor of less bulky
conventional armor plating and more costly yet lighter CoreTek Light fusion
plant recently put into production on Talon. These changes lightened the core
of the 'Mech while reducing the overall bulk, which allows the designers to
add the additional equipment for the recon variant. Like it mother design,
the Shadow Hawk recon variant's head assembly incorporates a full-cockpit
ejection system.
The new Shadow Hawk is equipped with a number of long-range and short
range weapons, including a Mydron rotary autocannon, a Harpoon-4S Streak SRM,
and a pair of Intek Hellborer Lasers. This combination means the SHD can
support long- and short-range combat activities. In addition, a full
electronics package upgrade was performed, and the design was outfitted with a
Kallon Sure-Shot C3-MU C³ Master Computer and a Wunderland Beagle Beagle
Active Probe allowing the Shadow Hawk recon variant to lead and operate as a
part of a recon lance or company. The designers, as a bonus and forethought,
added universal relays and power supplies cables to the chassis' right torso
and extra software to the 'Mech's electronics that allows the unit to be
relatively quickly retrofitted with a Garret/Guardian Interface Model 2B
Guardian ECM.
The Shadow Hawk recon variant does, however, retain the primary defect of
its predecessor, the SHD-2H: thin armor plating. The design is also very
reliant upon ammo and can easily deplete its primary weapons ammo supply with
three minutes at full fire rate. In addition, the designs weapons are much
lighter when compared to other modern designs. The designers feel, however,
that with a little restraint by the pilot combined with the unit's primary
mission as a recon unit that the design will easily off set these defects and
raise to be a primary recon lance command 'Mech within the FC military.

that were sorted out as high tech machines reached even the units stationed at
the periphery rim.
As OBM payed only very little for that mechs considered worthless by the DCMS
these Shadow Hawks were refitted with high tech for a reasonable price.
==Capabilities:==
Every machine was overhauled from ground up.
As the reliable CoreTek fusion engines were still in a very good condition the
designers kept them just as the chassis to further lower the costs.
To boost its maneuverability the jump jets were brought to the maximum
possible number and to make use of them double heat sinks were incorporated
even though some criticized the higher cost.
The weaponry was stripped out and a Imperator light gauss rifle now forms the
core of its firepower. A newly developed redesign of the Diverse Optics ER
Medium Laser, the Blankenburg 511 ER, was added as a backup to the gauss at
short to medium ranges, while the SRM was upgraded to a streak model.
The designers dropped the LRM because they thought the superior firepower of
the main weapon would be enough at long range.
To incorporate all that new weaponry into the old TTS turned out to be very
difficult and so the new SHD-refit got the locally produced Atlan Electronics
AE TT3 Hawkeye Modul BLM.
The early consideration to incorporate an active probe were dropped later as
that would be carried by the speedier lance mates.

Well, it's been about a week now, and I suppose it is time for me to declare an end to the contest, at least for now. Here is my opinion on the designs you've all submitted.
Vagabond's Design:
Pros:
1) The sheer amount of useful stuff you have managed to fit in the machine while still giving it respectable firepower is amazing.
2) I rather like the backup weaponry. ER Medium lasers are not something I use often, but they work well in all the examples here. It has made me rethink my opinion of them. Streak-4s are about where streak missiles come into their own, as well.
Cons:
1) The cost, good god man, the cost! It's really high tech, and in the end, I think House Davion could afford it. I, on the other hand, could not. (Well, maybe I could, once 3067 rolls around, but I might prefer something cheaper anyway.)
2) More of a usage issue than anything else: the C3 computer. That's a lot of weight, and my unit operates in Comstar like formations rather than lances usually. C3i is an interesting idea, but I get the feeling they would not really like to part with such technology. So, this is a lot of dead weight for the moment.
Misc:
1) I might one day try some simulated battles with C3i computers. Comstar won't part with theirs, but I can salvage'em from downed Blakist machines.
Rudel Gurken's Design:
Pros:
1) OMG, Light Gauss! Sniper, anyone? Good choice for a main weapon. It's just barely outside the "head cracker" category, and might still do the job against lights.
2) You increased the jump jets to full power. I do appreciate that.
3) Cost. This is very inexpensive (comparatively), and I appreciate that too!
Cons:
1) To be honest, I think the SRM-2 can take a hike, and probably with it, the CASE. Maybe another laser, more ammo, I don't know, I'm kinda blue skying here.
Misc:
1) Not a bad idea for a variant as well.
Sleeping Dragon's Design:
Pros:
1) Wow. That's some pretty darn good speed out of a Shadow Hawk.
Cons:
1) Again, cost. It's durn expensive.
Misc:
1) I think this design has convinced me to get a Chameleon in the lance, just for the fun of having fast moving, large machines.
Overall Decision:
The designs are all very interesting, and while I remain impressed with Vagabond's design, I have to give this contest to Rudel. He gave me something fairly quick, decently cheap, and played on my love of the "big guns". I need to hammer out what to do with the leftover space from the SRM-2, I think. Might play with the design a bit, but other than that weapon, I really like it. Sleeping Dragon put forth an interesting contender, but I still have to vote firepower on this one.
Thank you all for participating, and I hope that I all participate next time as well. 8)

To that SRM, if you don't like the small streak launcher (I don't, it has written BOOM all over it) change it for standard missiles and armor. Standard launcher can use a lot of special ammo. I'm thinking about warheads for anti-infantry work and infernos to show Liao that stealth is not that cool as it looks
Can I try another design?

Hooray! I won a contest!
If you don't like the streak whats with an active probe and another ER medium instead? (But the CASE will have its use even with no ammo: 16 points of an exploding light gauss are able to cripple this machine with ease!)

Go right ahead, I'm always interested in seeing new stuff.

True. All depends on how much I need the half ton. Cripple is bad, but it's the total destruction that I really want to avoid. So long as I can still limp away from the battle, I'm good enough off.
As for the SRMs, I tend to like the 4 pack myself. Mostly it is an ammo issue. I like my max ammo for a weapon to hover around 20-30 shots, depending on the weapon. With an SRM-2, I get more worried about me feeling the sting of the missiles, unless there are multiple launchers.
But if you do multiple launchers, why not just get a bigger rack, eh?

The contest may be over, but I figure I'll post this anyway.
BattleMech Technical Readout
Type/Model: Shadow Hawk SHD-5DR
Tech: Inner Sphere / 3060
Config: Biped BattleMech
Rules: Level 2, Standard design
Mass: 55 tons
Chassis: Kallon Type VII Endo Steel
Power Plant: 275 Core Tek Fusion
Walking Speed: 54.0 km/h
Maximum Speed: 86.4 km/h
Jump Jets: 5 Rawlings 55 Standard Jump Jets
Jump Capacity: 150 meters
Armor Type: Kallon Unity Weave w. CASE Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
3 BlazeFire Longshot ER Medium Lasers
1 Garret/Guardian Interface Guardian ECM
1 Mydron Excel LB 10-X AC
Manufacturer: Kallon Industries
Location: Nanking, Talon
Communications System: Garret T-20
Targeting & Tracking System: Garret O2j
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
Designed as a multi-role 'Mech, the original Shadow Hawk exceeded even
the designers' wildest expectations. Serving all house militaries, including
the Star League army, this medium BattleMech used its impressive array of
firepower with devastating effect. The Shadow Hawk was as adept at serving in
a heavy lance as it is in a recon lance. Given both its track record and
popularity, the push to redesign this venerable BattleMech was only natural.
During the summer of 3066, the Vicore group contacted most of the house
militaries with their idea. Somewhat surprisingly, only the Free Worlds
League, the Federated Suns and ComStar showed any interest in this new
design.
Kallon Industries, Earthwerks Incorporated and ComStar all worked with
the designers in the evolution of this new Shadow Hawk, which they envisioned
as a cavalry unit. The one hurdle, however, that ComStar and the Federated
Suns had to overcome was the lack of facilities cleared to manufacture the
'Mech. Using a similar solution to the one reached with the Capellans, Vicore
recommended that Odin Manufacturing on Orestes build the design, with Kallon
using both the Nanking and Talon plants.
==Capabilities:==
The Shadow Hawk manufactured by Talon Industries makes extensive use of the
latest technologies, including endo steel and Ferro-fibrous armor. The engine
used is the standard CoreTek fusion plant that the 'Mech originally used; the
designers felt that, while an XL engine might have allowed more weapons, it
would have decreased the Shadow Hawk's survivability factor. The 'Mech's speed
has not changed, though its maneuverability has vastly improved with the
addition of new jump jets. The original Shadow Hawk had suffered a major
handicap with its original armor capacity, but the inclusion of Kallon's Unity
Weave erased the problem that the original Maximillian armor had created. Like
many of these redesigns, the Shadow Hawk's head assembly incorporates a
full-cockpit ejection system.
==Variants:==
The SHD-5DR variant of the new Shadowhawk is designed for use as a command
'Mech in recon units. The first addition is heavier armor, intended to ensure
the survival of the lance or company commander, along with his information. In
addition to heavier armor, the 5DR mounts a Garret Guardian ECM Suite,
intended to protect the 'Mech from advanced targeting systems as well as to
break the C3 links of opposing recon units.
The 5DR lacks the 5D's firepower, trading the class 5 rotary autocannon for a
longer-ranged LB10-X AC. It should be noted, however, that the while LB10-X
has a lower damage output, its damage (with standard munitions) is more
concentrated and reliable than that dealt by the rotary AC. The medium lasers
are replaced with Blazefire extened-range weapons. The Streak SRM 4 is removed
completely, replaced with a third ER laser, in order to free tonnage for the
amor and electronics. It is expected that the greater armor protection and
longer range of its weapons will keep the 5DR from harm.
==Deployment==
Many units in the Federated Suns military, such as the First FedSuns
Armored Cavalry and the Deneb Light Cavalry, have received the new Shadow
Hawks. Kallon has also sold a few to mercenary units (with the authorization
of Duke Hasek) such as the Arcadians and even Wilson's Hussars, in gratitude
for their support of the Capellan March during the Civil War.

Star Raven's Design:
Pros:
1) LB-10X AC. I admit, I didn't actually think of that as a main weapon. But it does meet all the criteria, and renders SRMs redundant as a backup weapon. Having a negative modifier to help hit and disable the small little suckers I will mostly be dealing with is appreciated.
2) ECM is always nice. It might end up redundant in the lance, but if so, I can just replace it.
Cons:
1) Lotta lasers for me. Despite the - well, let's face it - tactical stupidity of it, I'd probably remove one for a machine gun just to have more slug throwers. I have an abnormal fascination with projectile weapons as opposed to laser weaponry.
Misc:
1) Price is good, but not great. I think somewhere in the 6-7 mill range is as much as I would pay, so you get a gold star for helping me find the line between expensive and not.

| The LBX just jumped out at me, when it occured to me that it and the AC/5 have got the same range (though without the min).

I have the opposite - I like energy weapons and pure energy armaments.

I used to be like that, and I still have my moments, my current Tesla design is a good example. But I felt that lasers were...too cold, too clean, too efficient. They didn't seem to fit with the gritty, militaristic world I'd come to love. So I tend to shun them for heavier ballistic and occasionally missile weaponry. The current crop of new ballistic weapons, as well as the specialty autocannon ammunitions has me feeling plenty happy, as well.

Normally I do Fluff, but I will wait for the critique and then fill it in. It is Lvl 3 since I used 1 1/2 tons of ammo for the LB-5X. Cost was the objective, and kept that in mind, kept single heat sinks.
AWAD- Love the Shawk looks, the original stinks in battle

AWAD's Shadow Hawk Design
Pros:
1) ECM. Having had time to plan this out, I realize now that ECM will not be present in my personal group of 'Mechs. I also just realized a moment ago I left no room for the hypothetical Chameleon I mentioned I wanted, so I need to rethink that. ECM however, is still unlikely to be carried by my buddies.
2) Jump jets are full power. I do appreciate that, and consider it a plus, even if I neglected to mention it in a machine above. I mention this, because I think I did.
3) This design occupies a niche of "in-between" designs. My Hawk will likely be upgraded to this, and then upgraded to something past it. It's low tech level (relatively) and low cost ensure it will be used, even if only temporarily.
4) Nice heat curve as well. Hard to overheat too much with this at once, so the single heatsinks are entirely forgivable.
Cons:
1) Some disharmony between the LBX-5 and SSRM-4. Seems like going with one crit hunter or the other is the best idea. In this case, I think the better hunter is the SSRM-4. Which leaves the LBX-5 to long range plinking and the occasional anti-aircraft work.
2) Somewhat anemic firepower compared to other designs posted. I say somewhat, because 5s can be awful deadly simply for the reason that people would rather ignore them at first.
Misc:
1) Level 3 for a half ton lot of ammo doesn't really bother me, though I do prefer to keep full ton lots. Use'em if necessary, but avoid them if possible.
