A question I've been thinking about.

Is there any purpose at all behind wet naval vessels in BTech anymore? Or have hovercraft pretty well super-ceeded them?

On planets with significant water content [ie: oceans] a wet navy would serve alot of purposes.

Large Scale Cheep Transport of cargo from one land mass to another. Coastal Defense. Harbor Defense. Mobile Firebases. Navy HQ Defense. Search and Rescue. Mobile Airbases. Disaster Relief. Mobile Deployment Points.

And more.

With the rules for Super Large Naval Logistical units you can now create Carriers, Battleships, Missile Cruisers, and Supertankers. All would easily have a purpose on a key world with Oceans.

There are two major problems with hovercraft in naval settings! They are very limited in size and their engines must be running all the time (if they havn't got amphibic equipment.)

Just imagin a 60K ton battle ship, 4 turrets with 3 long toms each, either the short range cannon or the normal artillery piece. add in a couple Arrow systems and then several hundered tons of small point defence weapons. could be fun as hell to run a couple naval battles with a naval group like that. Granted they arent practicle but they are going to own a water world.

Here is a queston would something that size use normal mech weapons or would they go with space naval grade weapons?

Or maybe a unique mix between the two.

I wanna make a SSBN with Naval Missile Launchers for the ICBMs.

With space defense systems and warships (space-type) mounting capital weapons, and y'all mounting capital weapons on wet-navy ships, how about this idea:

A submersible carrier. This is something I came up with years ago. I even have the plans lying around in a sketchbook somewhere. Basically, it's a really big sub, flat on top, similar in shape to the Boomer ICBM subs we have today, only much larger. The conning tower doubles as the air control tower. the deck serves the same function as a surface aircraft carrier. On the underside, you have a bay that launches/retrieves subfighters (minisubs--read "Sharuq" or "Stingray" by William H. Keith for a better explanation of these). Of course you have all your point defense weapons all around.

The advantage is you can sink, cruise to the deployment point, launch your aerospace craft, blow buildings/armor/infantry/battlemechs to pieces, return to the carrier, and sink into the briny deep. You're sheltered from capital lasers, naval-grade ACs and railguns, and you still have the range and power of an aircraft carrier, plus no one will really know if you're lurking just offshore or not.

Sure, on landlocked worlds, it's pointless. But on water worlds, why not? And you could use the subfighters against ships, undersea bases, battlemechs, and undine armor.

Heck, I may design one, just for kicks.
