History
The Inner Sphere saw a massive rise in aggressive campaigns in a period later known as the Age of War.
In 2412 the government of the Lyran world of Coventry was looking for measures to defend its rapidly growing Industries. Besides strengthening its armor and infantry units the Coventry Militia wanted a strong air support.
As airfields are easy and well-liked targets the idea came up to construct a “mobile airfield”: An aircraft Carrier!
First specifications included room for two full wings of conventional fighters and a lance of VTOL's, a fusion power plant to make it independent of fuel and a top speed of 35 knots! And so Concept 1 of 2415 had a projected full load displacement of 65.000 tons.
But before the keel could be laid several problems occurred: The Age of War caused a sharp rise in military technology and so the aerospace fighters got superior to any conventional fighter by far! The change from conventional fighters to aerospace fighters required a lot of additional tonnage and as these high tech machines had a much greater fuel consumption the ships internal tanks had to be doubled!
Concept 2 was ready a year later when critics pointed out that a “mobile airfield” had to be able to change its position more quickly to be of use and demanded a top speed of 45 knots minimum! They also wanted stronger anti aircraft weaponry and a greater VTOL complement.
Concept 3 , ready in 2417, had to be brought up to 100,000 tons displacement to meet all that specifications!
The contract for three ships was given to the Warwick Yards ltd, a constructor of massive cargo ships travelling Coventry's oceans, and the keel of the first ship , the Courageous, was laid in 2418!
Even while being constructed the blueprints were altered to incorporate a huge tactical operation center to coordinate all possible missions! This had to be one of the original specifications but it was simply forgotten in all previous concepts (this unbelievable occurrence lead to the firing of two responsible designers!).
So Concept 3a actually got a real ship and the Courageous was launched in 2420 and was ready for combat a year later. The next ten years saw the completion of the Glorious in 2424 and of the Furious in 2431.
The ships were outfitted with three catapults and three flight deck elevators and so were able to get a full wing airborne in just 12 minutes! 72 aerospace fighters and 12 VTOL's were carried in their belly while three platoons
of marines provided law and order on-board. The tactical operation center was staffed with 20 specialists and 50 medical personnel operated the huge MASH-equivalent. Even passengers, civil or military visitors, found acceptable accommodations.
After the impressive revealment of the Terran Hegemony’s Battle Mech in 2443 the decision to field aerospace fighters instead of conventional ones was proven right! The new ground weapon was able to swat conventional
fighters out of the air with almost no effort.
The Age of War was kind to the Courageous class as their fighter complement helped throwing back several attacks without the carriers being damaged at all!
The StarLeague era saw the ships in peak condition. Only the number of fighters were reduced to two squadrons per ship at the beginning of the Reunification War as most fighters were sent to the Periphery.
Only thought of as a temporary measure the carriers needed 25 years to get their full complement back. The war lasted longer and proved to be much costlier than expected.
The ships hadn’t much to do in the heyday of the StarLeague but nevertheless were kept in peak condition.
As the Amaris War raged across the Terran Hegemony the Lyran Commonwealth prepared itself for the seemingly inevitable war after Amaris defeat. Plans were made to upgrade the ships with CASE, large ER lasers
instead of the PPC’s, pulse lasers and AMS but all suggestions were dropped as the 1st Succession War roared into life in 2786!
This war was less kind to the Courageous class: In several attacks the Draconis Combine tried to obliterate Coventrys mech and fighter plants even by orbital bombardment! The Glorious was totally destroyed in such a bombardment as she was repaired at the Warwick Yards due to former damage! The yards and its surrounding industry complexes were victim of a Kuritan battlecruiser which wiped them out from space. Even though the attackers were driven away each time Coventry's industry received heavy damage.
The 2nd Succession War worsened the situation as the Inner Spheres technology level began to drop rapidly.
The 3rd Succession War saw the ships in a poor shape. One ship or the other were out of action for decades being repaired after receiving damage in the wars countless raids. The PPC’s and most of its lasers were given off
board to keep mechs running and the fighter complement was temporary down to a wing of conventional fighters and a changing number of VTOLs. In 2993 the Furious systems were beyond repair and she was scrapped to
keep her only remaining sistership, the Courageous, running!
As technology levels experienced a sharp rise due to the data of the so-called Gray Death Memory Core the ship was slowly brought up to full operational status and outfitted with PPC's and lasers left over from the
Zeus mech upgrades. The fighter complement had just been brought up to pre-Succession War status as the Clans hit the Inner Sphere! Most fighters were stripped off the ship and thrown into battle at the clan front. They were slowly reassigned after the battle of Tukayyid in 3052 until reaching full status in 3055 ready to counter the clan onslaught that must inevitably come!
They must not wait for long! The Jade Falcon incursion of 3058 proved to be the hardest test of the battlehardened carrier! Constantly changing position she threw her fighters into battle to get air superiority where needed and so played a vital role in the repulsion of the clan attackers.
Despite being discovered by Jade Falcon fighters several times her own fighter screen and the ships of her flotilla could drive them of each time while getting only minor damage herself.
After the clans defeat Captain Horst Schlämmer was decorated and in honor of the Steiner dynasty the ship was renamed in Graf Zeppelin, the name of the only german (though actually never completed) aircraft carrier of the 20th century.

I like very nice fluff. _________________ Stinger If it's "creepy" to use the Internet, military satellites, and robot aircraft to find a house full of gorgeous young models so I can drop in on them unexpected, then FINE, I'm "creepy". Howard Wolowitz. BBT.

The fluff mirrors my own construction process!

Oh, sorry! had to recalculate the engine and transmission equipment so the standard cargo had been reduced by 3,600 tons! _________________ Reality is where the Pizza-man comes from!'Gucken, petzen, verpissen!' This could be explained by the age of the ship.
Still it's a nice work! _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!
