OVERVIEW
The Catapult in its many variations has been a mainstay in the CCAF for almost as many years as the design has been around. With the introduction of the advanced technologies and their implementation in construction it is most assured that newer and more refined versions of the Catapult will continue to be used for at least the next century. The design is not without flaws, however, and several companies and design teams within the Capellan Confederation were directed to look into a new or updated possibilities to increase the effectiveness of the CCAF's premiere fire support Battlemech.
One design, under review in the design phase, is the SJP-XO-1 SiJiao Pao or "Standing Catapult". The name is fitting upon first glance at the new design, as it is almost completely built on the old Catapult chassis. This was done in hopes of simply update the existing Catapult assembly lines, shorten the amount of time to train existing pilots as well as keep the familiar image of the Catapult among CCAF forces and civilians.
Capabilities
From the earliest phase of the design process the SaJiao Pao needed to be flexible. Considering the current state of the CCAF forces and the unbalanced amount of certain technologies available to all units one piece of equipment available to one unit might not be available to another. The design teams opted to atempt to turn the Catapult into a Omni-Mech as well as strengthen the chassis, upping the weight class slightly. The result was an extremely flexible and potent fire support 'mech that could be sent out in any configuration to the field.
The SaJiao Pao, much like its smaller ancestor, is quite mobile, reaching speeds over 60kph and capable of jumping over 100 meters with ease. Premium firing posistion is an absolute necessity for fire support missions and the SaJiao Pao is just as capeable as any other 70 ton fire support on the field today. Cost is spared at the expense of weight with the standard engine and internal structure. 11 tons of standard armor are in place, giving it slightly more durability than the Catapul as well. Design variations with Endo Steel and Ferro Fibrus Armor types are being looked at still.
Currently there are over 3 dozen possible configurations for the SaJiao Pao, but only around 5 of these have any real chance of making it to the fields.
The first 4 configurations are all built around the Arrow IV Mobile Battery, already a mainstay in many CCAF fire support companies. The massive system is supported by 10 missles each, doubling the staying power of the Catapault.
For secondary equipment the Primary mounts 3 of the Catapult's 4 ER Medium Lasers and an ER Large Laser for slightly more punch. One extra double strength heat sink is installed, meaning this design does run hot when firing all its lasers, or jumping and firing most of its weapons.
Beta configuration replaces one of the medium lasers with the expensive but extremely useful C3 Slave system. Very few line units in the CCAF have these networked systems available, but for the few units paired with some of the newer CCAF designs that are network ready this variant is extremely potent.
Charlie Configuration replaces the large laser, two of the medium lasers and the extra heat sink for a triple battery of LRM-5s supplied by a total of two tons of ammunition. The ammunition possibilities of the LRM launchers make this a dangerous support mech, espicially if paired with a Raven or other TAG or NARC equipped spotters.
The Delta variation, equipped with a C3 Master Computer in place of the large laser is the most expensive. Though C3s are extremely costly, the flexibility of having a fire support lance with its own C3 Master makes the cost worth it. A fourth medium laser finds its way on to this model in place of the extra heat sink.
Echo variation is a version of the Beta's C3 equipped design, but replaces the Arrow IV rack with a pair of LRM-15s, each equipped with two tons of ammo.
The final variant is more of a standalone design, equipping two massive LRM-20 racks, with 2 tons of ammo each and two of the medium lasers.
Deployment:
None. The SJP-XO-1 is still in the design phase. It is planned that the C3 Slaves will go units with the popular YH10G Yu Huang. Any of the C3 Master units will go to form their own C3 units with lighter C3 equipped 'mechs. Any of the standard versions will most likely go to units requesting replacements for the Catapult design.
