I've finally found some active BT-gamers in my area. In the years before I've been constricted to playing in chihawk's wonderful PBeMs, collecting, researching early BT history and joining Mechforce Germany in Berlin.

Last Friday I had my first 'live' BT game this year. I ended up playing against both of them, in a lance vs lance game. Random mech assignment (we were going to modify the last roll to make the tonnage fit roughly, but it wasn't needed). Variant of own choice. I ended up with a Rifleman (AC 10), Centurion (Davion-AC 20), Trebuchet (gave the SRM variant a try) and Clint (AC 10). They took a Warhammer (Davion, but not THE Davion variant - the one without MGs but 20 HS), Commando, Enforcer and Cicada (7/11, PPC variant). A couple of observations:

1) I kick a**!!!! Sorry, I just felt like saying that. We ended the game when the Commando was dead, the Warhammer was a smouldering wreck and the only substantial damage to me was the Rifleman missing the RT (and hence, the arm).

2) The AC-10 Rifleman can fully take on a Warhammer and win.

3) The SRM Trebuchet and AC 20 Centurion are both good, solid in-fighters. One runs cool and is a crit-seeking nightmare (though it didn't do me good in this battle), the other can unexpectantly deal horrible damage (2 bonus points over the Hunchback - at the expense of a slight amount of armour and un-needed ML and HS, it gains long-range weaponry; it has the AC in the arm, giving it great flexibility....I'm a fan of arm-mounted weapons, something not universally shared, right?).

4) The AC-10 Clint kicks major a**!!!!!

5) At the same time, strangely, the Cicada wasn't all too impressive. Something to do with the minimum range and possessing MGs rather than a ML as back-up.

Right, we had fun. So we called another meeting for this Friday. We ended up deciding on a lvl2 IS-vs-Clan game. 2 Lances IS vs 1 Star Clan. This time strictly with BV, to make things fair. I could've easily been the sole Clan commander, but I've played the Clan-side to death in these games. And seeing as (if my memory serves me correctly, discounting the PBeMs) I've only ever fielded IS lvl2 exactly ONCE, I volunteered to be one of the IS commanders.

We chose the IS lances, the Clan forces will be decided in this week.

My lance:

Atlas (commander: 3/4 pilot)
Rifleman (PPC variant)
Champion
Vindie

Peter's lance:

Thunderhawk
Victor (commander: 3/4 - it was decided that the Hawk would've been too munchy with a better pilot)
P-Hawk
Raptor (2 LL variant)

If I may go into a brief explanation: I've always marveled at the Atlas. A bad, but fun design. Fragile and in-efficient (in terms of engine and HS). But potentially deadly. I wanna try, and see how well it can do. The Rifleman.....well, I'm a major fan of these machines, and this variant seems to actually be able to do well. The Champion comes from my Mechwarrior 3 games. A sweet-looking 'mech with utterly no frills. The Vindie is another favourite. Good solid, nothing else.

I cringe at Peter's lance. The Victor rules! But what else? I hate the T-Hawk, way too munchy. I hate the P-Hawk, has always been an over-rated design, the upgrade changes nothing. And the Raptor is just stupid. Too slow against the Clans, with paper-armour and XL engine. My guess is, it'll die first turn it's shot at..... And his lance is more expensive than mine!!!!!

I realise I'm a bit slow. But I'll just go for the good old stand-back-and-let-him-come-to-me philosophy. All bar the Champion suit this role. I guess I'll relegate the Champion to following Peter's P-Hawk and Raptor around, trying to save their a**es for at least one turn......

I know that our opponent will field a Thor and a Gladiator. With him only having ca 11000 pts to spend and him probably taking enhanced pilots, the other 3 will probably be in the light-medium range.

Well, what do you think? Comments, suggestions? This is very much new territory to me.....

One last thing. I noticed specifically in the last game, but this has probably always been my strategy of choice: 1st I engage the closest (usually: fastest) opponent. I concentrate fire on him, and only on him. He usually drops quickly. By that time, all other enemies will well and truly be in range. At that stage I concentrate my fire on the biggest, baddest and toughest enemy. I will suffer, will have casualities and it will look like I'm getting defeated. But once the Bad One falls, I'm usually in a good spot. Again, what do you think? A universally usable strategy? Or should it be modified. Strategy has NEVER been my strength, tactics is something I'm better at.....

Well, this has been long enough. Thanks, anyone who bore this through. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Yup, the SRM Trebuchet rules in-close. I like it a lot for Level 1 Tech.

As for strategy and tactics: Strategy lets
you plan a military campaign, tactics is what you use on the battlefield.

I usually look at the opponents and decide which of my forces will deal with who. Then proceed to killing the easiest target, that is the lowest to-hit modifier and range. For a 2-Lance vs Star battle I`d probably want to try your plan, Clanner guns hurt and they mount lots even on the speed demons. So yes, just kill the closest first, then take down the biggest guns, like Ryoken-Bs.

First off, you can say "kicks ass" and no one will mind.

What was the BV limit you had to choose your mechs from?

When piloting an IS lance I prefer to attack one mech at a time if possible. Most don't play Clan vs Clan against me because I seldom lose "duel" type games and that what the Clans do.

Oh. Good. Well, it's best to be careful, you never know on whose toes you're treading. But since you're the master bartender.....let the cussing begin!!

Well, Peter and I chose our lances after the lvl1 game last week. Klaus has a week to chose the Clan forces. But our recon force (speak: a chat between Peter and Klaus) has made out a Thor and a Gladiator!

Glad to hear you got game. FOr me it has been the opposite, after playing for years almost every week it has dried up.

As for tactics, so much relies on your enemy. As for me my speeding units almost never go first.... they lag behind and then jump the wounded mech or exploit a hole. This would play havoc with your system. I also have been a prick and have sat behind hills until the other guy gets so peeved they charge across in random order, then I piecemeal kill them. Of course I have done the nutbag charge thing also.

As of the Gladiator and Thor..... that is not recon.... it is mobile attack force. Actually I like and respect both mechs but I do not see them used much by Caln players. It may be that both are not high speed attackers or gun platforms. Against Clanners I rate them as fair, but against IS they are the best Mechs, especially if Clan Honor rules are in effect. The have more mobility and firepower than any IS mech. This allows them to hunt down whomever they wish. I have a feeling this pair will cause you hell.

AWAD- It always seems a Thor is one of the last mechs standing

Hm, if my 1st target of opportunity happens to be the enemy's biggest 'mech....well, good! To paraphrase a German proverb: That would be swatting two flies with one blow!

There is a slight misunderstanding: OUR recon forces (which are Peter having a talk with Klaus about the up-coming fight) MADE OUT a Thor and a Gladiator. How come Clan players in your area never use these? The Gladiator is deadlier than a Daishi, and the Thor is the best 'mech ever created!!!!! In my (Clan books), these take up the two top slots for best 'mechs!!!!! So yeah, I have lots of respect to start with!!

It is projected (but as yet unconfirmed) that the other three 'mechs will be an Uller, a Puma and a Ryoken. The fight will be this afternoon, I'll post the results. Wish me luck, guys, or better yet, lots of skill!!

And to you AWAD, a sincere wish that you find all the joy in playing again!!! Even after the 100,000th game!
