Wonderfully, the "Legend of Drunken Master" by Jackie Chan was not his only attempt as the Drunken Master...
Flashback to 1979...Jackie Chan was still doing martial arts movies...stuntwork would come in 4 years. Jet Li was 17 and releasing his first movie "The Shaolin Temple" and "Empire Strikes Back" was still a year away.
Yes, in 1979 Jackie Chan made the movie "Drunken Master" where he plays a troublemaker who is sent off by his dad to train with his brutalizing uncle. His Uncle is skilled in the martial arts, and is very famous. But Chan's father gets in to a gang war of sorts, and is targeted by a bounty hunter that would scare Boba Fett. In order to save his father Chan must use the lethal (and hilarious) fighting style of the 8 Drunken Immortals.
Basically, the movie is an excuse to have lots of fighting scenes and odd Kung Fu movie comedy. The martial arts are incredibly well choreographed and belieable. The biggest killer of martial arts filsm is the wire work...none of that here. People stick to the ground like they should. But, again, the fights are awesome. Over half the movie is fighting...which puts it on par with most martial arts movies. One cool thing was that near the begining of the movie Jackie Chan uses the "Snake and Crane" style, which he used in his most popular film up until that time (The Snake and Crane Arts of Shaolin).
The comdey is plain silly, mostly revolving around the drunk parts of the fighting.
Overall, this is a great movie if you like martial arts. If you dont, you prolly wont like it. Legend of Drunken Master is actually the sequal, using the same charecters and locations, but at least 10 years after the original took place.
This is a cool movie...but VERY hard to find. Or it was until they released it on DVD.
Drunken Master:
8/10
Other Reccomended Martial Arts films...
Jet Li's "The Shaolin Temple"
This is Jet Li's first movie, and is awesome. The fighting is some of the best ever, espicially the fight at Shaolin in the end. Made in 1979
Jet Li's "Twin Warriors"
Pretty good movie with an awesome plot. it follows 2 warriors as they grow up in a martial arts temple (maybe Shaolin) and are always equal in combat. One goes good, the other evil, and they face off at the end. Whats really cool is Jet Li uses Tai Chi as his style in the movie...the real Tai Chi that is, not the aerobic excercise version.
Jackie Chan's "Snake and Crane Arts of Shaolin"
In order to find the assassin of the 8 Kung Fu masters, Chan must draw them out using the "Snake and Crane" technique, a style created to be unstoppable. This one plays as more of a detective movie, but awesome fights as well.
Jackie Chan's "Legend of Drunken Master"
This is the sequal to Drunken Master and Chan's character must stop a smuggling operation.
"Iron Monkey"
Basically this is China's version of Robin hood. One of the best movies I have ever seen.
"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"
If you havent seen this Oscar nominated film then you need to be kicked...

Thanks for the list. Now I can drop my wife some hints for my first father's day present.
