Okay if you had the money to spend and the space in the mech, which of these would you go with Fusion, XL, LE, or XXL?

That would depend entirely upon what my goals were for the design.

Fusion engines are the heaviest of the bunch, but all the crits are confined to the center torso; if I was going to do a mech that had a lot of ammo on it or was an Arrow IV machine, I'd likely stick with a regular fusion if possible.

OTOH, if you're looking to create a light-end speed demon, then unless you're in a low-tech nation there's no reason *not* to use XLs or lighter.

XLs go boom when side torsos are destroyed. That's all the reason in the world to avoid them unless you have no choice.

Non-standard fusion engines are vulnerable and expensive, so I generally avoid them unless I can somehow justify their inclusion.

Generally I use them when they can either significantly improve mobility or weapons payload. In both cases I consider whether it won't negatively inflence the 'mech. Inclusion of a XL engine in a mid range brawler chassis is kind of counterproductive.

I avoid XXL engines because they are ridiculously overpriced, way too easy to damage and heat producing. I've yet to see a 'Mech where the inclusion of these things would outweigh the drawbacks.
