The computer that I have all my Heavy Metal stuff on had a major crash, and so even though I got it fixed, a few of the individual programs are still borked. The one system I have that's still working right doesn't have a printer. So to compensate until I get things operational, I had an idea to put the party up against some up-armored civilian vehicles for a bit as a shakedown.

Motorcycle

This is a utilitarian motorcycle that sports a sidecar. The sidecar has a machine gun (1 point BTech damage) mounted to it, but the mount is such that the weapon can only point forward. The vehicle has 4 total points of BTech armor, but as you can imagine the driver is exposed from the sides and rear (a bug screen protects them from the front). These would largely be patrol vehicles and possibly even skirmishers.

Gun Pickup

This is a standard pickup truck that's been up-armored (8 points BTech armor). Inside the bed is a turret mount that can handle light support weapons, such as machine guns (1 point BTech damage), mortars (ditto), recoiless rifles (ditto), sniper rifles, SRMs, or LRMs. The turret is operated by a single soldier, with a driver in the cab. Another soldier can sit in the cab, while two more sit in the bed. This would primarily be a mobile fire support vehicle, whose purpose is to "run and gun" while protecting other, smaller units and cargo vehicles.

Infantry Transport

This is a passenger van that has been up-armored (8 points BTech armor). As a passenger vehicle, it can transport a squad of infantry with ease, plus gear and a support weapon or two. An additional soldier can ride in the front passenger seat, possibly as security for the driver. Some vehicles have machine guns mounted to the roof, operated by a soldier who stands up on one of the seats and works the weapon through a port in the roof; however, these units aren't common, both because they expose the soldier and because they create an access point for rain to get through.

Gun Truck

This is a standard BTech flatbed truck whose cargo space has been converted into a weapon emplacement. These units would have turreted machine guns, SRM launchers, or LRM launchers, and are meant as a surprise for anyone who wants to try and attack a convoy: when the battle is joined, the sides of the cargo bay drop and reveal the arsenal.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Ummm... do you think people would be crazy enough to fight BattleMechs in lightly armored civilian vehicles? In theory, sure, it would work, but I think most would run away when you told them to go attack that giant robot on this little motorcycle! Smile

Right now I don't know whether or not the party would be mech jocks; we're still trying to even get things together.

Plus, never underestimate how much damage a team of infantry can do if deployed just right.

Not. Enough.

Its not the infantry you have to worry about. Its the jackass with the slingshot and the GOLDEN BB.

My last party nearly fell to two platoons of infantry with SRM launchers.

3/4ths of the party were so focused on trying to knife-fight with the Cataphract that was guarding the objective they almost completely ignored the soldiers that were milling about the compound. The only reason they survived was because one of the party members realized the situation was an obvious trap and so did some house-cleaning with his LRM launchers.
