Here goes.
The fiction I'm doing, the previous campaign I was running, and a few other bits I had in place are all parts of an alternate-reality BTech verse. The ultimate goal of everything was that "the Jihad doesn't quite go off as planned, thus leading to the Dark Ages stuff never happening."
The campaign I was running had it thusly: a secret faction had gone to ground on Caph, waiting for the day that they could come to the fore and restart the Terran Hegemony.
They were far enough along to where, when bandits started causing trouble on the planet, they were able to take charge of the unified response; the party, a group of mercenaries working under subcontract for Lindon's Battalion, wound up being their spearhead. When it was discovered that Blake had staged everything to hide their own troop movements on the planet, the Neo-Hegemony thew its full war machine into gear and, the party leading the way, threw them off the planet, seizing a good deal of tech and info stores in the process. As the Neo-Hegemony was now the de facto ruling power on the planet, the party was given a land grant in exchange for their assistance. The party had just signed a contract to help assorted parties retake a pair of Jade Falcon planets for Rasalhague when the campaign fell apart due to real-world matters.
The framework I'd set up had it that, with their successes on Caph, the Neo-Hegemony faction would have immediately set about making as many friends as possible. Given that they came bearing gifts of technology and military tech, Outreach, Northwind, the Outworlds Alliance, a handful of pro-Victor planets in Davion Space, and Rasalhague would eventually make treaties with them; Carver V, Errai, and Terra Firma would eventually fly the banner outright. The ultimate plan would be that the Hegemony would expand gradually, such that when the Jihad hits they're able to Nerf the attack by a suicidal but ultimately successful bid to retake Earth, giving the anti-Blake resistance something to rally around in fighting back.
I'm slowly trying to get a group back together; if I did it'd be an odd mix of gaming vets and newbies. But given just how much ground work I've laid, and the fact that at least one player will be from the previous campaign, I'd like to keep the ball rolling.
I'm thinking of having a campaign in which the party is a group of low-level mercenaries hired to conduct what should have been a routine contract (bandit hunting, backwater garrison, or something similar) when they blunder into a small-scale Blake operation (barracks, listening post, test facility, et cetra). It'd be a hard slog once the Blakes figure out that the party's on to them, but if the party plays their cards right they'll win and get some nifty tech in the process. I'd figure out later campaigns from there.
Any ideas for planets I can have this happen on, plots I can do, et cetra?

Randomly slapped together some pre-made characters; those the party doesn't take I can use as NPCs.
The party members are down-on-their luck mercs who have just formed their own organization.
For their first mission, they are hired by a Mr. Geist. He represents a concern that has investments on the planet, and would rather than the fighting between Ingress and the Duchy be brought to a swift end so that their investments aren't harmed.
In reality, Geist is a covert operative who has hired the party on behalf of the Neo-Hegemony... and as such, they'll be doing more than defending against forces from the Duchy.
Thoughts?
