This is something of a pet peeve of mine.
The other day I got to looking through the 3067, which has all of the mechs that were designed for MW4. Most of them have lower arm actuators, but no hands; instead, no matter how small the weapon (such as a single machine gun), their arm ends in a gun barrel.
IMHO, if a mech has a lower arm actuator, why not go ahead and give it a hand actuator if there are enough critical slots available?
I can understand only having the shoulder and upper-arm actuators, as that would allow a mech to rotate its arms around and fire to the rear.
But I don't see any tactical advantage to having lower arms without hands. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." Wolfwood to a random cat (Trigun)

We've had this discussion at a few Battletech games and everyone generally agrees with this...it's OK to have some without hands for "flavor" reasons, but for the most part every mech should have them as a default. _________________ www.210sportsblog.com

I too think it's for the cool look.
It depends on the designer and his preference. _________________ Reality is where the Pizza-man comes from!'Gucken, petzen, verpissen!' Some design works seem to regularly employ nutcases.
Or perhaps hands went out of fashion, wait a couple decades and they're back again! 8)
